Assistant Lecturer/Phd CadidateLoughborough University Oct 2008 - Aug 2012Postgraduate ResearchersSimon SmithEmail: S.Smith3@lboro.ac.ukFax: +44 (0)1509 223917Dept. of Politics, History and International Relations Loughborough UniversityLoughboroughLeics.LE11 3TUUK BiographyI joined the department in October 2008. My current doctoral research is a Historical Institutionalist account of EU-NATO cooperation through the mechanism of Berlin Plus. This research, under the supervision of Professor Mark Webber, takes a path dependent theoretical approach to the design of Berlin Plus and aims to investigate why Berlin Plus persists when it is widely regarded as problematic. Furthermore, it aims to explore any potential forms of EU-NATO de-institutionalised cooperation that exists outside of the Berlin Plus mechanism. This project will be tested through case studies such as the EU Military Operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR-Althea) and in Kosovo where both the EU and NATO have conducted missions.I completed my undergraduate education in History and Political Science at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Before joining the Dept. of Politics, History and International Relations, I received my MSc with distinction in International Conflict and Cooperation from the University of Stirling under the supervision of Professor Graham Timmins. -
