The team developed monitoring solutions to real-world challenges, such as devising methods to monitor old assets. In-house and out-sourced innovation supported these activities, addressing challenges including communications to remote sites, protocols and low power sensors. The team was responsible for delivering circuit ratings to the National Control Centre (grid operations) and performing calculations to provide thermal rating enhancements. Working with external partners, the team significantly upgraded the company’s in-house thermal rating software capabilities for cables and transformers and delivered a new real-time thermal rating system in the control room. Cables PolicyNational Grid Company Jul 1996 - Jul 2002Initially working in the cables team applying my specialist materials knowledge, was later appointed the cables policy team leader. Throughout this time ran numerous innovation projects outsourced to academic partners. These largely focused on risk managing the adoption of new cable technology, but also included soil science, organic chemistry and bio-degradation.Later was seconded to the Project Management division for a year, directly applying the knowledge gained from the research projects during the assessment of a major cable project tender. During this period also ran National Grid's forensic laboratory investigating equipment failures.
