The Advisory Group is responsible for proposing new Working Groups in the area of Solid Materials to the D1 Study Committee (Materials and Emerging Test Techniques) chairman. The group consists of a global body of experts who combine their skills to prepare the terms of reference for the new bodies of work.

Represent the UK at the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) Study Committee D1 "Materials and Emerging Test Techniques". Study Committee D1 (http://d1.cigre.org/) is responsible for monitoring and evaluation of:• New and existing materials for electro-technology• Diagnostic techniques and related knowledge rules• Emerging test techniques which may have a significant impact on power systems in the medium to long term• Support of other study committees in their analysis of recently introduced and developing materials, emerging test techniques and diagnosis techniquesAlso a member of the Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) for Solid Insulation, helping to determine topics in need of study and the development of corresponding Terms of Reference.If you would like to be added to the UK email list to find out about new Working Groups or details for the annual UK liaison meeting please contact me.

Lead role in developing EPRI’s regional strategy for electricity transmission and distribution utilities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).Applying knowledge of the regional electricity market and considering local drivers, prioritised new growth opportunities and tried to ensure members were engaged in the most appropriate projects. By building strong client relationships with individual members targeted EPRI’s resources to deliver effective project support and technology/knowledge transfer of the research outcomes. Through regular face-to-face meetings, acted as the technical interface between the electrical transmission and distribution utilities in EMEA, and EPRI’s Research and Development programme managers in the US. Leveraging my network, forged links between EPRI and regional research providers helping establish collaborations.

As part of the European commercial management team was responsible for creating and delivering the regional end use marketing strategy and plan. Working closely with the global R&D, Technical Services, Communications and Marketing functions created impactful evidence-based messaging to promote Dow Wire and Cable’s materials to utilities across Europe. This was disseminated through technical meetings with utility cable experts, articles in the trade media, trade shows and by speaking at conferences.Managed Dow Wire and Cable’s efforts in a multi-year collaborative innovation project funded by a UK Government agency that led to two patent submissions. Additionally initiated other projects between the company and leading research institutions.During my final two years with the company took on additional responsibility for technology scouting as Dow Wire and Cable sort to grow its business beyond its traditional core activities.

Lead the team responsible for creating the company's first condition monitoring strategy and policy, defining when and how the company should buy and apply condition monitoring. The team developed monitoring solutions to real-world challenges, such as devising methods to monitor old assets. In-house and out-sourced innovation supported these activities, addressing challenges including communications to remote sites, protocols and low power sensors. The team was responsible for delivering circuit ratings to the National Control Centre (grid operations) and performing calculations to provide thermal rating enhancements. Working with external partners, the team significantly upgraded the company’s in-house thermal rating software capabilities for cables and transformers and delivered a new real-time thermal rating system in the control room. Following a secondment to a cross-company team reviewing the maintenance planning process, took up the role of Capability Development team leader responsible for asset management process development and KPIs.

Initially working in the cables team applying my specialist materials knowledge, was later appointed the cables policy team leader. Throughout this time ran numerous innovation projects outsourced to academic partners. These largely focused on risk managing the adoption of new cable technology, but also included soil science, organic chemistry and bio-degradation.Later was seconded to the Project Management division for a year, directly applying the knowledge gained from the research projects during the assessment of a major cable project tender. During this period also ran National Grid's forensic laboratory investigating equipment failures.
