I have a passionate interest in seeing the potential of observations from space maximised to the benefit of society. I have significant experience in both satellite and ground based atmosphere and ocean remote sensing, which is a great help in my current role leading the Space Applications and Nowcasting R&D area of the UK Met Office. My area of Met Office is responsible for leveraging data from space to drive applications that provide both critical situational awareness for forecasters and also drive state of the art numerical models. The leveraging of these data from space allow us to better forecast and monitor natural hazards such as surface water flooding, volcanic eruptions and even space weather events. The improved situational awareness and model performance that we derive from space data fundamentally underpins the Met Office's ability to generate better warnings and alerts to help people to make better decisions to stay safe and thrive.Internationally, I have been the Chair of EUMETSAT's Operations Working Group, a core member of the WMO Expert Team on Satellite Systems and Utilisation and also a member of the MyOcean Executive Committee.I have significant experience of communicating to wide audiences even outside of my specialist field, including engaging with newspaper journalists (e.g. Financial Times) and doing live television interviews (e.g. with BBC News). In the future I hope to play a larger role in ensuring that our society benefits more from observational data from space. These benefits will not only be to the UK economy but also to the health, security and well-being of peoples all over the world.

Strategic Head Of Space Applications And Nowcasting R&DMet Office May 2020 - PresentExeter, England, United KingdomThe Space Applications and Nowcasting R&D branch does Research and Development work that is aimed at two main areas of concern:- Developing systems that make timely use of new sources of Earth Observation data so that the Met Office can better know what is happening now in our environment and how the situation will evolve in the very short term over the next few hours ahead- Providing Earth Observation data ready for assimilation into numerical weather prediction models that make predictions on timescales from hours to days ahead. -
Head Of The Satellite Data Products And Systems GroupMet Office Jul 2011 - May 2020Exeter, United KingdomCurrent work includes:* Leading, managing and developing a team of scientists and engineers who are involved in the development of satellite data products and the systems that do the satellite data processing for imagery and data assimilation applications* Managing projects to gain the benefits of new satellite data for Numerical Weather Prediction. This includes current activities towards preparing for Meteosat Third Generation (MTG). Another recent project I led was to gain the initial benefits from Suomi NPP which carries the ATMS, CrIS and VIIRS instruments* Managing the development of systems for producing operational imagery for Forecasting applications from geostationary and polar orbiting satellites* Internal liaison with the Forecasting and Observations programme areas* External liaison with Universities, EUMETSAT, WMO, NOAA and other satellite agencies. I am the UK delegate to the EUMETSAT Operations Working Group and co-delegate to the North Atlantic Data Exchange (NAEDEX) Group. I am also a member of the United Nations WMO Expert Team on Satellite Utilization and Products (ET-SUP) -
