I am a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia, researching 'The influence of an outcomes-based curriculum on the design and implementation of the Western Australian senior-secondary "Philosophy and Ethics" syllabus'. I am interested in the ways in which the conception and practice of philosophy vary according to time and culture.I graduated with an MA in philosophy from University College Dublin in 1994. My dissertation was titled ‘Language and Ideology: The Significance of Hermeneutics and Semiotics for the Theory of Ideology’, and it involved an analysis of figures such as Hegel, Marx, Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur, Habermas and Eco.I moved to Cambridge in 1995 where I was accepted as an MPhil student at King’s College. I spent the summer of 1995 in the University Library, completing a survey of the secondary literature on a mid-17th-century Persian text called the Dabestan. My application for funding from the British Council was unsuccessful, however, and I was unable to pursue my formal studies.I worked as a bookseller at Heffers, an academic editor at The Running Head, and later specialized in document analysis and digital encoding at Griffin Brown. From 1996 to 1999 I was Assistant Director of the Science and Human Dimension Project, a ‘public understanding of science’ program based at Jesus College and directed by writer, John Cornwell.I moved to Australia in 2003, and became the primary carer for my two children, although I also worked part-time as a philosophy tutor at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle, and in Extension at the University of Western Australia. In 2008 I became a full-time senior research officer at UWA, reporting to the DVC for Education. I was the executive officer for several committees and working parties, and was closely involved in the University’s major Review of Course Structures.Having completed my Master of Teaching degree at UWA, from May to December 2011 I taught in the Philosophy, Values and Religion department at Hale. From 2012 to 2015 inclusive, I taught full-time in the upper primary (Years 4–6) at Perth Montessori School (now 'Perth Individual - A Progressive Montessori College'). In 2017 I returned to Hale, teaching ATAR Philosophy and Ethics, as well as RAVE (Religious and Values Education) in the Middle School and PVR (Philosophy, Values and Religion) in Years 9 and 10.
