Profile bio

About Simon Leigh

After 16 years in the Pensions and Benefits industry I took on the fresh challenge of a change of career. Following my interest in buildings and architecture I enrolled on a Construction Management degree at the University of Westminster where I graduated in 2008. Immediately on graduation I was offered a Trainee Site Manager position with Osborne in their Rail Division. During my time at Osborne I have worked on a number of different projects within the Rail Division primarily dealing with Access for All projects, including major structural and award winning work at Clapham Junction.I moved to Dyer and Butler in order to expand my knowledge of Construction and Civil Engineering with a new firm, looking to increase my experience outside of the Rail environment and further my career. Completing a number of multiple site projects with Swindon Borough Council along with the widening of a 55m concrete footbridge over a river and nature reserve. During this time both Swindon Borough Council and Network Rail changed their procurement procedure, which resulted in my work returning to rail work but on a minor works aspect. At this time Osborne were successful in wining a 5 year framework with Network Rail and after an initial conversation, I was offered a Site Managers role within the framework, which is where I am currently working.

Listed skills include Rail, Structural Engineering, Refurbishing, Construction Management, and 21 others.

Project Manager

Current

Reading, England, United Kingdom

Apr 2023 - Present

Senior Agent

Site Based

Joining an existing small team working on a new access road for our client Homes England, this site in West Sussex, has a new junction from the nearby main road at one end and a bridge over an Environment Agency main river at the over. The project has multiple service diversions in the main road as well as a main water pipe diversion and overhead power. A really interesting project and a great team to be start working with on this.

May 2022 - Apr 2023

Senior Site Manager

Osborne Infrastructure

Site Based

Working on the Connect Plus framework, primarily on and around the M4, taking projects from early contractor involvement through to completion. Up coming projects include concrete repairs to the support piers of the elevated section of the M4 and surveying of the half bearings of Denham Viaduct on the A40.Moved over to the Hertfordshire framework heading up the site team on the New River Bridge project. A £6m link road and bridge in Hoddesdon, working with both new and existing colleagues we build a fantastic team to get this project over the line during the COVID pandemic and a very hot couple of days during the summer, to the satisfaction of our client Hertfordshire County Council. There was great collaboration all round between the HCC Structure team and the Osborne Infrastructure site team, which enabled this project to be such a success for all.

Feb 2018 - May 2022

Site Manager

Site Based

Day to day management of construction sites delivering earth work support, footbridges and platform extensions based on the railway network.Moving over to the Highways part of Osborne Infrastructure I worked on the Featherbed Lane road of rail bridge, which was a fantastic experience. Joining the team as the new Site Manager, we constructed new abutments either side of the open West Coast Mainline and installed a new steel bridge (partly fabricated on site) using a Sarens Demag CC2800-1 crawler crane with super lift tray. Working in a very restrictive area, due to existing housing and access requirements, we constructed a new much safer road junction between Featherbed Lane and Kind Edward Street on time and on budget.

Apr 2015 - Feb 2018

Site Agent

Swindon, United Kingdom

Initially working on a project that covered minor bridge repairs to a number of subways, culverts and bridges for Swindon Borough Council (SBC). I was involved with the tender preparation on a number of other projects for SBC, which culminated on the widening and resurfacing of a 55m concrete bridge, which spanned the River Ray and a nature reserve. The bridge and connecting footpath had been designated part of a cycle route. This required the parapet railings to be replaced with a higher specification railing, the bridge and part of the footpath to be widened and a cross roads further along the route from the bridge to be reconfigured to provide better turning, altogether with a resurfacing of a stretch of path approximately 450m long. Unfortunately shortly after completing this project SBC decided to change their procurement process, which meant that Dyer & Butler took the decision not to tender for any future work with SBC.I therefore moved to the Network Rail Minor Works team based at Swindon, where we had won a project to support Network Rail to provide access for Amey to complete their touch examination of the railway arches and station subways along the Great Western route. This involved liaison between Network Rail Route and Network Rail Property as well as some of the tenants of the rented units, in order to gain access to the unit to carefully remove the internal cladding and then replace it on completion of the examination.
