After the successful completion of a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Aquaculture and Fisheries Resource Management Simon’s professional career began in commercial aquaculture with the Broome Pearling Industry Co-operative Hatchery. During this time in industry Simon worked closely with several other organisations, namely Marine Produce Australia, Kimberley Aboriginal Aquaculture Organisation and Broome TAFE. These relationships enabled a broadening of experience from molluscs into crustaceans and several finfish species. He later adapted these commercial skills to a research environment while overseeing Curtin University’s Aquatic Research Laboratory. The flexibility of this role enabled him to study a range of aquatic species via both captive and ecosystem based research. During his ten years with Curtin University Simon delivered lectures on topics such as coral reef fish identification, the impacts of various forms of recreational fishing and the Leeuwin current’s effect on West Australian fish as well as Co-authoring several journal articles and book chapters.Drawn to a new challenge Simon joined Indo-Pacific Environmental in a full time capacity in early 2015 following collaborating on various projects in the preceding years. As a Supervising Scientist Simon is responsible for logistics planning, remote field activities, data analysis and report writing for a number of Northern Territory based programs. Several of these programs investigate the industrial influence of heavy metal burdens within a range of tropic levels, the results of which Simon is equally adept at conveying to government regulators or community groups. . Simon also assists clients with the production of a range of environmental approval documents such as waste discharge licences, maintenance dredging and determination of site specific trigger values.
