I originally trained as a carpenter in the 1980s, I have over 30 years experience in building and construction. In the mid 1990s I suffered a serious workplace accident was hospitalised for several weeks. As a result I am passionate about workplace safety, and know how to have the difficult conversations, and create rigorous processes to ensure everyone gets back to their loved ones at the end of the day. My initial transition into a safety role was as a project risk management coordinator with Westfield (later to be rebranded Scentre Group), and I progressed into a Regional Risk Management role overseeing projects in multiple states. At any given time I would be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of over 500 individuals, across upwards of 15 different sites, and complex projects ranging in value from $20 million to more than $300 million. This includes highly challenging worksites such as the redevelopment of the Sydney City Westfield. I offer a combination of direct construction experience, extensive involvement in developing comprehensive systems and processes to meet regulatory requirements, and a deep commitment to inspiring everyone on-site to be personally involved in fostering and supporting a culture of safety. I am well-versed in dealing with industrial relations, union representatives and agencies such as SafeWork regulators in multiple jurisdictions, and have a deep and extensive professional network of contacts on all sides of the construction industry. I have been directly involved in the implementation of various safety management software systems including i2cx project centre, Aconex and Beakon. The identification and management of electrical hazards is a specific areas of expertise, as is creation of a strong workplace safety culture of people protecting people. I also have a long-term involvement with Mates in Construction and have received industry recognition for my contribution to suicide prevention.
