Simon Harmer Email and Phone Number
Since leaving the Armed Forces in 2014, after experiencing life-changing injuries due to an operational incident that cut short a successful military career. I've had the privilege of working with some incredible organisations full-time and as a contractor. As a motivational speaker, I've spoken to audiences across the UK & Europe - working with some of the biggest brands, including TEDx, Facebook, META, The Royal Ballet School, and Northampton Saints Rugby Club, to name but a few. I refuse to be defined by my injuries; I lead an active lifestyle and have found new ways of enjoying the things I did pre-injury. These experiences have given me the unique gift of absolute adaptability, a desired quality in a world of uncertainty and chaos.I sit on several boards and committees, including the Medical Advisory Committee, The Royal British Legion Centre for Blast Injury Studies, the CASEVAC Club and Team True Spirit.

Research AssistantAdvance Study 2015 - 2017Dmrc Headley CourtThe ADVANCE Study is a collaboration between the Academic Department of Military Rehabilitation (ADMR, Stanford Hall), Imperial College London and King’s College London.Due to the world-leading battlefield trauma care provided by the UK Defence Medical Services, there was a significant increase in the survival rates of severely injured military personnel who served in the Afghanistan War of 2002-2014. This necessitated a comprehensive long-term study of the surviving casualties. ADVANCE aims to study, prospectively, the incidence of a very wide variety of physical and psycho-social outcomes. It will facilitate learning for future conflicts and enable appropriate support to be given to injured servicemen and their families. The study investigates both the physical and psycho-social outcomes of battlefield casualties in the long-term, and is the first prospective cohort study in this area. Previous studies into war veterans have been done involving military personnel from the Vietnam and World Wars; they were of retrospective or cross-sectional design and had inconclusive results. My role in the ADVANCE Study was multifaceted. I helped recruit and book our injured cohort and some non-injured participants in the programme. I would explain precisely what would happen throughout the day, including book travel and accommodation. When required, I would perform some clinical observations on our participants; my background as a combat medical technician was instrumental in helping the day run smoothly. One aspect I enjoyed the most from this role was supporting participants in obtaining assistance through our third-sector colleagues. I could signpost queries to relevant parties for advice on employment, financial, recreational, and mental and physical support. -
Combat MedicUk Ministry Of Defence Feb 1997 - Jun 2014World WideMy role as a Combat Medic in the British Army took me all over Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East. Primarily, my role involved delivering the following key responsibilities. ∙ Give first aid on the battlefield.∙ Provide medical training to the Army.∙ Supply medical support on all kinds of operations and exercises.∙ Help with medical evacuations in hostile conditions.∙ Provide health education to the Army.In addition to these responsibilities, I also took on other vital roles which required additional training. As a unit physical training instructor, I was responsible for providing and promoting physical training to departmental personnel. I achieved this through a diverse programme of physical education and training. All this was delivered under the direction of a more senior physical training instructor. As a weapon handling and shooting instructor, I would provide basic instruction on a soldier's primary weapons systems. I was also responsible for arranging and managing shooting practices for department personnel. As a recruit training instructor, I was privileged to train recruits in the military. I performed this role as a junior manager looking after up to ten soldiers, then as a senior manager looking after up to forty soldiers and their mentors.
