Barclays Group Plc - Mortgage Finance Division Feb 2004 - Mar 2005

Strategic changes to retail and corporate mortgage lending policy. Reporting to the Director of Risk, I led a programme to change lending policy across Barclays' retail and corporate mortgage sectors, in the face of an increasingly competitive environment, declining lending volumes and poor customer satisfaction, and divergent attitudes to risk by lenders, particularly in relation to the rapid growth in buy to let products. The lending proposals met the twin objectives of improving Barclays' competitive position and securing stronger risk management, supported by Barclays Group Risk. The changes also addressed competitive and service quality issues, and were well received. Significant improvements were achieved in approval timescales and underwriting quality, and lending risks in the key Buy to Let sector were mitigated by a risk sharing agreement with a UK insurer.

The project was also able to deliver improved registration times and quality controls, and reduced costs from the redesign of core administration processes.
