I am an international award-winning climatologist with over 35 years' experience, who is well-recognized by UN, federal, and humanitarian agencies, foundations, and the private sector. I am in high demand by national, regional and global stakeholders as an expert in climate services, who sets international standards, chairs negotiated consensus, creates software tools, implements capacity development, provides advisory services to management and government, and trains decision makers, practitioners and students. I take a professionally critical approach to climate models to target information that is fit for practical purposes. I have presented in over 70 countries and at 100s of conference and workshops, and on numerous radio and TV appearances.I am able to focus in quickly on the key questions to address practical problems, by combining my breadth of experience with my ability to understand multi-stakeholder perspectives. I can see the broader picture as well as understand the technical details, and I have extensive field experience in low- to middle-income countries as well as in the developed world. I am able to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of climate-related project objectives, strategies and deliverables, and identify lessons-learned that could lead to course corrections that add value. My mixed arts and science training has provided a foundation for becoming a strong translator and effective communicator in multidisciplinary settings.Impact and achievements:• Set global standards, strategy, and policy in climate services, including: - Lead authorship of the Implementation Plan for the UN-lead Global Framework for Climate Services; - Contributions to the definition and implementation of the WMO’s global infrastructure for climate services; - Authorship of WMO’s recommendations and guidance for the production and verification of seasonal climate forecasts; - Chairing of various WMO Expert Teams and Working Groups; - Research and consultation on heatwaves under the UN Early Warnings for All initiative; - Training of meteorologists and practitioners from about 150 countries.• Contributed to major global reports, including the IPCC Special Report: Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation. • Created and developed the popular Climate Predictability Tool (CPT), used by governments, research centers and businesses in over 100 countries to produce operational and experimental climate forecasts. • Co-developed forecast systems for the Red Cross/Red Crescent and the World Food Programme.
