STEM Odyssey is an online tutoring business ran and operated by university students who are all passionate about science, math and engineering.

I am part of the UON Tennis Committee where I help run weekly comps and university sport events. As treasurer I manage the finances of the tennis club such as memberships and court hire.

I took up this job because I thoroughly enjoyed all my subjects during school and was inspired by my teachers to help other students. My discipline across all learning areas allowed me to excel, providing me with a strong foundation for helping others. Since starting I have learnt how to work with each student and to address their individual needs/goals. Tutoring others not only has seen them improve in school, but it keeps me sharp for my own engineering and mathematics subjects.

I had the fantastic opportunity of joining the team of manufacturing engineers at SABAC Limburg on their brand new project for manufacturing the horizontal stabilisers of the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet from Lockheed Martin. They specialise in the manufacture of structural sandwich parts with thermosetting fiber reinforced skins as well as the manufacture of monolithic parts with thermoset prepreg materials. I experienced their vast array of aerospace projects ranging from elevators, stabilisers, flap track fairings, and even parts for ESA rockets. I gained invaluable experience working in a professional engineering environment, solving problems, overseeing projects, managing teams and producing high end technical aerospace components.

As a result of my skills in engineering drawing and CAD I was given the opportunity to help with drawing parts for the mining equipment they manufactured in house. I refined my drafting skills to produce consistent technical drawings and models which met industry standards. I was also taught how to operate the manual lathe and horizontal bandsaw (as well as general workplace machinery/equipment. Under the guidance of the head machinist, I learnt the basics for operating the CNC mill and lathe which has become an invaluable skill in deepening my consideration for the manufacture when engineering parts for industry (we often received quotes for custom parts which paid no attention to the manufacturing aspect of engineering and thus required adjusting the design to meet the constraints of our machinery). Whilst working in the machine shop, I interacted with the other tradesmen who repaired the blast hole drill rigs. I often went out in the workplace to measure parts and discuss with the boilermakers/fitters on the best way to design/manufacture parts and assemblies. This has greatly improved my teamwork and communication skills.
