My current position is with Spirax Sarco, a market leader in steam product design and manufacture. My role is within the design department of the UK manufacturing facility, leading a team of up to 5 engineers, as well as taking on my own projects. The projects within the team are extremely varied, including new product introduction, quality improvements, design for manufacture and assembly, recall management, etc. The projects incorporate initial fault investigation, through the concept and development of solutions, and implementing them within the business.As part of this role, my responsibility extends to providing engineering guidance over a range of issues within the team members’ projects, as well as liaising with other departments within the business (purchasing, sales, NPI, production engineering, planning etc.), and outside the business in order to keep the projects moving smoothly.Whilst conducting my own projects, I am also required to drive the other projects within the team to completion, with a firm eye on timescales involved. The team leadership aspect of the role also involves implementing training and development, target setting and regular reviews for the team, recruitment and selection, and driving the development of the department with the other team leaders.My main accomplishments in this role have been leading the redesign of a multi-million pound product within the North American market, designing, testing and implementing a design change within the Canadian market. I have also worked on a quick turnaround on a redesign of a historical product, FMECA of a bespoke product for a high-value customer, and the justification of a gasket change on a major product line.

This involved working on my own projects for the department, which included the support of the relocation of several production lines to our USA manufacturing facility, as well as supporting registration of products for sale within Canada, which involved detailed design reviews on many existing products.While in this role, I undertook an Engineering Education Scheme project, promoting engineering within a local school. This was a good opportunity for me to gain experience of leading a team, as well as explaining engineering concepts to non-degree level individuals. I was also made responsible for the department’s Sharepoint page.

My first role at Spirax Sarco was a design draughtsman within the New Product Introduction department. I was involved in detail in the NPI process, working on the design and development of a control valve, and of a pneumatic actuator. This involved conducting CFD/FEA analyses and reports, as well as detailed design work on the plug profiles for the valves and testing of the actuators.While in this role, I was also a member of the Joint Works Committee, which was the employee representation group for the company. This gave me valuable experience in discussions with high level management, as well as developing an understanding and empathy for all levels of the business.

CRDM is a market leader in rapid manufacturing, with SLA, SLS, DMLS and tooling capabilities. My role was as an assistant sales engineer, providing quotations to customers as well as ensuring progress was made with the ongoing projects. This role contributed strongly to my knowledge of the rapid manufacturing industry, as well as injection moulding and plastic properties. It was also a high-pressure environment, with a strong requirement to record-keeping, time-management and prioritisation.
