I have been in the electrical wholesale trade for over 30 years, starting on the YTS (like an apprenticeship, if you're not old enough to remember). Started in the warehouse, checking deliveries into the branch and putting stock away. Progressed onto the trade counter, then answering phones in the office, quoting and placing orders. Promoted to Assistant Manager and responsible for the office and warehouse, plus developing the team members who were doing what I had previously been doing. Promoted to external sales, responsible for building relationships with customers, bringing in new customers and expanding our share with existing ones. Promoted to Branch Manager, responsible for all the above as well as invoicing, cash collection, health and safety, facilities management and still visiting customers. Decided to return to a full-time external sales position, as building relationships and spending time with customers was the side of the business I preferred.
