About Simon Morris
Through studying MSci in Earth and Environmental Science my awareness of the environmental issues facing society grew, as did my passion to tackle these problems and protect the environment for the future. I have a passion in communicating scientific findings, and key environmental knowledge to empower decision making at both the consumer, and business level. Working as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between Bangor University and Lyan Packaging, I liaise between academic research and commercial application, embedding the latest scientific research within the company to inform decision making. The key aim of the project is the development of environmentally sustainable packaging solutions within the Direct-to Consumer food and drink industry. Packaging is often overlooked, and single-use in application, yet it has a massive un-seen environmental impact. I am to change this through Lifecycle Assessment of currently used packaging, and the subsequent development of bio-based alternative products. In addition, I invest spare time into sports performance coaching (water polo) within the Wrexham area supporting individuals to realise their goals and reach their potential. I currently coach a variety of levels, from juniors just starting in the sport, to athletes within the Welsh national team. I communicate well in both this setting and as head coach of the Chester University Water Polo team, creating a culture of performance that is enjoyable to be a part of.

Ktp Associate - Sustainable Packaging Development Lead
CurrentI am the Knowledge Transfer Associate within a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Bangor University Biocomposites Centre and Lyan Packaging, I liaise between academic research and commercial application, embedding leading scientific research within everyday company procedure, products and decision making processes. The aim of the project is to develop environmentally sustainable packaging solutions within the direct-to-consumer food and drink industry. I have a passion in communicating scientific findings, and key environmental knowledge to empower decision making at both the consumer, and business level. I am using Life Cycle Assessment as a tool to quantify the product environmental impact, and identify hotspots for focus of future product development.
Performance Water Polo Coach
Design and coach the water polo programme for the Chester University water polo team, currently competing in the Northern 1A league. Combining my technical qualifications, with experience, personality and vision setting I had designed a programme specifically tailored to improve every team member's individual ability as a vehicle to improving overall team performance. In order to maximise training output, on a 4.5hour programme every week, fostering a fun environment that is inclusive but promotes hard work is crucial. As a result of this every session is consistently attended by at least 15 players across the men's and women's squad. Sessions are developed through evidence based research, aiming to remain at the forefront of the always evolving coaching practices. Communication is vital within training sessions and games, in order to gain the trust and buy-in of players, as well as the ability to adapt tactics and game plans 'on the fly' in a game setting. Over the course of the season I have been able to develop the squad, closing the gap between ourselves and other competing universities that have access to greater training facilities, training hours and player pools.
Wastewater Technician Intern
During my 3 month internship within the Science and Support team I shadowed both the wastewater and trade effluent teams. We were applied to wastewater treatment works that had issues with the quality of final effluent being discharged. As part of our investigation into these issues, I was responsible for collecting samples from across the works, before analysing them within the on-site laboratory and compiling a report of my findings. I would then present my recommendations for potential solutions to the problems at the works. As part of my placement I also conducted a project completing a flow and load survey for a local WwTW, with the aim to understand the performance of the works, and weather there is capacity to increase the loadings onto the works. My findings were presented in a written report and supported by a presentation. During this placement I developed my Laboratory skills from those previously just gained from university work projects. I honed my ability to work as part dispersed team, as well as holding my self to account when working on individual projects. I was able to tailor my report writing and presentation skills to be to convey scientific findings in an easy to understand way.
