My professional occupations have seen me consistently work within the rural industries and estate management sectors. For many years this was with the National Trust based at the White Cliffs of Dover, from where I managed the Kent and South East London countryside portfolio which saw significant visitor pressure from numbers that exceeded 3.8m each year.Although not a born and bred Scot, I had long sought the opportunity to relocate north of the border and that opportunity was realised in 2013. I have since been General Manager for the National Trust for Scotland’s Aberdeenshire portfolio, and more recently as Countryside Manager for Crown Estate Scotland’s Glenlivet Estate. Following the end of my contracted term at Glenlivet, I joined Scottish Land and Estates (SLE) in June 2021 as Policy Adviser for Access, Visitor Management and Rural Crime.SLE is a membership organisation that represents the interests of rural land management businesses across Scotland, with our diverse membership covering a wide variety of business sectors, all of which are vitally important to rural prosperity and sustainability. SLE strives to have the true value and contribution of land managers recognised and valued both publicly and politically. It aims to promote the contributions of land managers and estates, protects property rights, ensures appropriate business and regulatory framework for members’ interests are in place, and plays a key role in maintaining and delivering sustainable rural communities. My role is to identify and develop key organisational policies for the rural sector, with a focus onaccess, visitor management and reducing rural crime. This work encompasses the production of policy briefings and technical guidance, providing advice to our membership, and supporting the organisational work across the policy team. I additionally seek to enhance policy and advocate policy change in ways that will further members’ interests though undertaking extensive engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including representational lobbying activity to influence national policy development and implementation, and thereby support a positive experience for all in rural Scotland.
