Worked on commercializing four new Oxyshield coextruded barrier Nylon film structures, a coextruded matte nylon and a variety of Aclar and PMP coextrusions. Markets served are Food and Beverage Packaging, Pharmaceutical Packaging and the Electronics Industry. Actively involved in development of adhesive systems for Aclar laminations, and a variety of functional coating systems for nylon films. Experience in coextrusion, biax orientation and a variety of coating technologies.Developed coextrusions for anti-fog meat lidding, PVdC inline coating on biaxially oriented nylon, coextrusions for high oxygen barrier packaging, nylon film for heat seal applications and a variety of high performance film development using fluorinated polymers, polycarbonates, poly-lactic acid among others. This line is now fully commissioned and producing product for Courtaulds Performance Films. I had considerable experience of web handling (12” up to 72”), aqueous dispersions, coating technologies, drying, dyes and UV absorbers. I was also responsible for the technical side of the Z-Flex product (adhesives for flexible printed circuits).Apr. 91 – May 99Group Manager Chief Scientist and Technology Manager in Corporate Polymer Products Group. Work involved understanding the technologies the group was developing and transferring the best of those technologies to Courtaulds' businesses. The job involved close collaboration with Courtaulds Performance Films, Courtaulds Films Cellophane, Courtaulds Packaging and Courtaulds Advanced Materials. Developed novel coloration techniques for polyester films (UK3), battery separator technologies, polymer blends for gas barrier. Aug. 89 - Aug. 91Courtaulds Grafil, Coventry, England Senior Research Chemist in Carbon Fiber Research Group (Courtaulds Grafil) working on new thermoplastic toughened epoxy fiber sizes. Involved in laboratory research, pilot line trials and full production trials. Instigated and supervised collaborative development work with DSM Italia and Henkel to provide alternative fiber sizes for Courtaulds Grafil. Technologies developed were installed in Courtaulds Grafil Inc., Sacramento in 1991 prior to the group's sale to Mitsubishi Rayon.Jan. 88 - Jul. 89Courtaulds Strategic Research Group, Coventry, England Joined Courtaulds to help set up the Strategic Polymer Research Group. Developed a computer controlled electrochemical method for rapidly determining the surface area of carbon fibers. Supervised one technician and one post-graduate level scientist.

Lecturer In Chemical PhysicsUniversity Of Kent Jul 1984 - Dec 1988My research interests included the electrochemistry and applications of intrinsically conducting polymer films. I developed a new computer controlled electrochemical technique for the study of dopant diffusion in conducting polymer materials. I also developed a method for immobilizing glucose oxidase on polypyrrole for use as a voltammetric glucose sensor. I supervised four Ph.D. students through to graduation, one post-doctoral student and eighteen final year project students. Funding for my research came from the Science and Engineering Research Council, British Petroleum Ltd. and ICI Ltd.
