I co-founded Monash Investors, and after 12 years my involvement is now winding down, following its merger with DMX. We had an absolute return focus to investing in shares, long and short, and our returns were very good. Prior to this, I spent 23 years as an analyst, portfolio manager and head of equities for large fund management businesses. Unusually for a professional fund manager, I was fortunate to move between firms that had widely differing investment styles of growth, value and DCF approaches. We took advantage of this experience to create our own style agnostic approach to investing that focusses on absolute returns instead of relative returns.What does this mean? Our absolute return focus means that every time we invest we do it for an expected pay-off. Relative returns do not interest us, rather we create wealth by investing in compelling stocks, both long and short, that meet a high return hurdle.Prior to Monash Investors, I held a number of senior positions within the financial services industry, culminating in roles as Head of Australian Equities at Colonial First State and then Managing Director and Head of Australian Equities at UBS Asset Management (Australia). I was also responsible for the ING Investment Management Australian equities team following its acquisition by UBS.
