ChairMoor Pool Heritage Trust Apr 2016 - PresentHarborne, BirminghamChair since April 2016, Finance Director since March 2013.Moor Pool Hall is a Grade II listed community hall at the heart of Moor Pool Estate, a historic garden suburb in Harborne, Birmingham, founded by John Sutton Nettlefold in 1907. Historically Moor Pool Hall was at the heart of the community and it has continued to serve this function. The Main Hall was used for social occasions such as dances, parties as well as local community focused events. After coming under threat in 2014 Moor Pool Hall and other community assets were saved by Moor Pool Heritage Trust for the benefit of the community and its future generations through a highly successful £325,000 fundraising campaign.Having achieved that, the Trust’s aims have centred upon promoting social inclusion, a healthy lifestyle and education:• Elderly residents on the Estate may be at risk of social isolation. This is addressed by regular activities for the over 50s including dancing groups, coffee mornings and local history talks. There are also groups to support recovery within the community, including a weekly Falls Clinic and the Salus Fatigue support group for those suffering chronic fatigue. For families in the community, there are a host of activities including Toddler groups, Messy Play and Munchkin Movies.• Alongside this, The Trust is proud to promote healthy living ranging from our Ageing Better Allotment programme to the varied sporting groups using our facilities.• The education programme focuses on Birmingham schools and particularly from Priority Neighbourhoods. Some comments from pupils': ‘I feel full of fresh air!’, ‘It’s just like the countryside!’, ‘I feel like Alice in Wonderland!’ This is all delivered whilst conserving one of the gems of Birmingham’s architectural heritage and the associated green spaces, and has included the development of the spectacular Nettlefold Community Garden. -
TrusteeMoseley Road Baths Sep 2019 - PresentBalsall Heath, BirminghamMoseley Road Baths is a Grade II* listed building recognised worldwide as at risk and having national significance. But it is also a much-used community pool that has continually hosted swimming for 110 years since its opening in 1907, providing healthy exercise for the local population of Balsall Heath. Our vision for Moseley Road Baths is as a vibrant and sustainable community asset and heritage venue running as a community business offering a range of health, fitness, well-being and community facilities inclusive of swimming.Unfortunately the Baths had been regularly earmarked for closure by Birmingham City Council (BCC) over the last 20 years. Most recently the pool was due to close in June 2017, galvanising local people to get together and call for a different solution – for the pool to be taken over as a community run facility. We secured commitment from BCC to transfer the swimming operation to us and took over running the pool in April 2018. We run the swimming facility as a community-owned and led organisation under a licence to operate agreement with BCC, on a part-staffed and part-volunteer model. Our model has been tried and tested in cities and local communities across the UK. Due to years of neglect and disinvestment by BCC swim numbers had declined due to regular unplanned closures and a limited public timetable, staff morale was also low. Community consultation revealed that many South Birmingham residents thought the pool was permanently closed. In almost a year of operation we have worked hard to develop volunteering capacity and improve staff morale. This includes training 25 volunteer lifeguards to enable expansion of our public timetable, providing a threefold increase in single sex swimming to meet demand from the large local Muslim population. We have also welcomed new activity such as family swimming, pre-natal classes and sessions for older swimmers. -
