Tcms Manager
Managing a team of 50+ software, systems & test engineers delivering operational, safety-critical real-time control systems, train information and train-to-wayside systems across multiple concurrent projects.I am responsible for the management and development of a large mixed team of systems, software and test engineers, with several team leaders as direct reports. My position involves the full life-cycle of technical management across multiple concurrent projects, varying from bids through to delivery of new or variation orders and ultimately to maintenance on completion projects. I have responsibility for the recruitment and development of team members, and have been the main contributor to the strategic plans for the department over successive years. I have technical authority over all aspects of the department’s deliverables, am responsible for assessing and mitigating project risks within the department scope, and regularly liaise with customers, suppliers and within the organisation at an executive level.
Tcms Software Engineering Team Lead
Software Team Leader for a team of 7 software engineers within the TCMS (Train Control and Management System) team.
Lead Engineer Tcms Software

Object Leader (Team Leader) - Software Engineering
Contract with extensions over 6 years - November 2002 to March 2009 – Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications - WarringtonSoftware engineer and team leader in a large project developing and customising real-time embedded Symbian and UIQ software for the successful series of Sony Ericsson smartphones P800, P900, P910, P990, M600, W950, P1, W960.My responsibilities included leading a team of 14 software engineers in the design, coding, testing and documentation of a variety of applications for the range of Sony Ericsson smartphones mentioned above. Development was performed initially using Microsoft Visual C++, and later in Metrowerks CodeWarrior, using the Symbian derivative of C++. Supporting tools included Rational ClearCase configuration management, Rational ClearQuest fault management, metaDoc document management and DOORS requirement management.
Software Engineer & Team Leader
Contract with extensions over 5 years - March 1997 to October 2002 – Intervoice / Brite Voice Systems Ltd - ManchesterSoftware engineer and team leader in a large project developing and supporting voicemail and GSM mobile phone applications for customers world-wide. Development and implementation was performed on SUN Sparcs, Ultras and Netras running Solaris (UNIX), using multi-threaded C, SYBASE Versions 4.9 and 11, UNIX shell scripts, IQ ReportWriter & the X-Designer Visual Programming Tool for generating X-Windows applications. I have also been involved in the design and development of several Java applets to enhance the voicemail product’s user interface. My responsibilities included design, coding, testing & documentation of several applications, including a billing utility for Cellnet (O2), an X-Windows operator interface for controlling GSM SMS (Short Message Service) broadcasts, and sole responsibility for the design & implementation in C and SYBASE of the GSM Mobile-Originated Short Message Service, and enhancements to the existing Mobile-Terminated service, which were required urgently by several customers. This involved liasing with several design authorities both within and outside the company, and reference to ETS and CCITT standards and 3rd party API documents. The success of SMS came as something of a surprise to the telecomms operators, and over the years many performance improvements and upgrades were commissioned. Eventually a fundamental redesign was required in order to massively improve performance. I had sole responsibility for the design and coding of the new SMSC software, and achieved the targets by multi-threading the software along with making many database improvements. I designed and coded the next phase of Brite’s SMS product release, with enhancements to allow the product to offer a bureau-style service to 3rd parties and to further improve overall throughput by making use of newer hardware and upgraded 3rd party APIs.
Software Engineer & Team Leader
Contract - extended 4 times - July 1994 to March 1997 - Ferranti Syseca - ManchesterSoftware engineer / team leader in charge of control systems development / integration / testing & documentation in a 70-man project producing safety-related real-time ADA and C software for the refurbishment of Hinckley ‘B’ Advanced Gas Reactor for Nuclear Electric plc. Developed on Rationals, then deployed on Encores running RTU (real-time UNIX), and later on DEC Alphas running OSF/1.My responsibilities included managing a team of 15 software engineers, as well as producing ADA software for the stations’ control systems, C code for testing drivers, and further ADA for the off-line facility to produce configurable control systems.
Software Engineer & Team Leader
Software engineer / team leader in charge of database, MMI, billing and fax development / integration / testing & documentation in a 30-man project producing SYBASE, ADA, C and PASCAL real-time software for an Inmarsat Standard C Land Earth Station (satellite - terrestrial / maritime communications). Developed and deployed on DEC VAX’s at various sites globally. The hardware comprised a custom-built signalling chassis interfaced to a redundant pair of VAX 3100s. These in turn were linked over DECNET to a redundant pair of VAX 4100s running OpenVMS, SYBASE & custom ADA software, and to VAXstations running MMI forms software developed using DEC TDMS & Pascal. My role as team leader, beyond man-management, was mainly in designing and coding databases, the routines to access them (using ADA to interface to SYBASE DB-LIB and calling SYBASE Transact-SQL stored procedures), triggers to ensure referential integrity, and later in tuning the databases for performance. I took on the SYBASE DBA (Database Administration) role for the project, including installing and upgrading versions of SYBASE.I was also responsible for producing the MMI using Pascal interfacing to DEC TDMS and DEC CDD+, and also using menus written in DCL to call reports prepared using SYBASE ReportWorkbench. I produced the software to allow billing of customer calls, and also a terrestrial fax delivery driver, produced by networking PCs running OS/2, Zetafax, and C code to the VAX’s using DEC Pathworks.I was sent to several customer’s sites to perform installations and acceptance testing, including 4 weeks in Italy, 4 weeks in Australia, 6 weeks in America and 6 months in Greece.
