About Simon Thor

A passion for particle physics, space, and data science. I actively contribute to these fields by conducting research, presenting my work at conferences, and organizing events for other students at my university. I also constantly try to learn more about these topics, especially programming in Python and MATLAB.

Simon Thor Work Experience Details
  • Eth Zürich
    Phd Student
Eth Zürich Sep 2024 - Present
    Geneva, Switzerland
Particle physics PhD student at ETH Zürich, based at CERN. I work with particles known as neutrinos, which are some of the least understood particles in the universe and a key to new physics. I am part of the FASER collaboration, which is the first experiment to detect neutrinos from a particle collider.
  • Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan
    Student Researcher
Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan Jun 2017 - Aug 2024
    Stockholm, Sverige
I am part of two research projects: one about space physics and another about particle physics. The current space physics research I do is on aurora, specifically a type of aurora known as transpolar arcs. I have published three papers and presented my results at numerous national and international conferences. The particle physics research I conduct is about dark matter detection at the ATLAS detector at CERN. • Royal Institute Of Technology
    Teaching Assistant
Royal Institute Of Technology Sep 2021 - Dec 2021
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden
Teaching assistant for the Introduction to Programming course (course code DD1331) at my university. I mainly assess students' code submissions and give advise and help.
  • Gjensidige
    Student Data Scientist
    Gjensidige Sep 2022 - Dec 2023
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden
I work on using machine learning and data science to detect insurance fraud. Collaborating and discussing with colleagues is a crucial part of my job. I therefore put a lot of effort into making it easy to understand my findings, via intuitive and interactive visualizations.
  • Mathworks
    Kth Matlab Student Ambassador
    Mathworks Sep 2020 - Mar 2023
    Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden
As a MATLAB student ambassador, I organize seminars at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, hold coding competitions, and share tips and interesting projects related to MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Cern
    Summer Student
    Cern Jun 2022 - Aug 2022
    Geneva, Switzerland
Internship at CERN, the largest particle physics research facility in the world. During this summer student programme, I mainly contributed to the LHCb simulation software stack, specifically the LbMCSubmit program. I also participated in workshops, lectures on particle physics, and visits to various facilities at CERN.I worked twice as fast as anticipated and therefore finished the project in half the time. I therefore worked and finished a second project: where I used LbMCSubmit to perform tuning on Pythia at LHCb. The results and code I developed from both of my projects are currently actively being used at LHCb. Based on my work ethic and the large impact of my work, I was awarded the LHCb Moritz Karbach summer student prize. • Google Summer Of Code
Google Summer Of Code Student At Cern-Hsf
Google Summer Of Code Jun 2021 - Aug 2021
Google Summer of Code is an international program where university students receive a stipend (worth $2700) from Google to contribute to open source software during the summer. I contributed to Rivet: a tool used by particle physicists to analyze simulated particle collision events. The goal of this project was to improve the plotting functionality of Rivet by using matplotlib in Python. • Research Science Institute (Rsi)
    Research Science Institute Scholar
Research Science Institute (Rsi) Jun 2018 - Aug 2018
    Boston, Usa
One of the world's most prestigious international summer research internships for high school students. I conducted research at the Center for Theoretical Physics, MIT. My research focused on the difference between quark and gluon jets in high energy particle collisions, as well as the performance of the new Jet Topics algorithm used for identifying these differences. I mainly used C++ and Python.
