Synthesis and evaluation of artemisinin-inspired compounds with potential anti-malarial and/or anti-cancer activity.

Scientist in the Department of Medicinal Chemisty in Hit-to-Lead and Lead Optimization projects targeted towards the identification of new medications for pain control in areas of unmet medical need.- Designed and executed synthetic routes to produce compounds, from milligram to multigram quantities, for biological evaluation. As a member of drug discovery teams, delivered both leads for further optimization and candidate drugs for clinical evaluation for multiple projects in the area of pain management.- Worked with international, multi-site and/or multidisciplinary teams and network groups to share best practices across the company and evaluate emerging technologies and early projects.- Disseminated information and provided training to chemists on microwave chemistry and vibrational circular dichroism, resulting in substantial uptake of both technologies and improved efficiency.- Interviewed and hired co-op and summer students for the medicinal chemistry department, and mentored several students under direct supervision or collaboration in the laboratory.- Led the organizing committee for the AZRDM Open House (Chair 2008, Vice-chair 2006) to celebrate outstanding young professors who were recipients of the AstraZeneca Award in Chemistry, and planned and executed an event for approximately 100 visitors, including tours and a poster competition for students.- As a member of the Chemical Safety Committee, regularly updated the department on chemical safety issues to educate chemists and ensured adherence to safety standards to maintain a safe working environment. Authored several SOP's.- Educated a variety of audiences, including high school students, visiting sales managers, and chemistry graduate students, on the role of medicinal chemistry in the drug discovery process through tours of the department.
