Cooler Heads Clinical Trial, Young Women’s Registry & Support Group, Psycho-Oncology Projects

As a volunteer for Stuart House, a program of the Rape Treatment Center, I play a direct role in helping child victims and their families cope with the traumatic effects of sexual abuse. I supervise and interact with the children before their forensic interviews, therapy appointments, or court school. Working with staff therapists, psychiatrists, child advocates, and district attorneys, I help make children feel safe with artistic activities and empathetic care.

As a Research Assistant, I am working on a clinical trial evaluating mindful self-compassion as a treatment for unhoused women experiencing symptoms of PTSD and substance use disorder, led by Dr. Dana Rose Garfin. I have developed relevant skills in clerical duties, screening and recruitment of study participants, creation and administration of study tests, and data collection. In addition, I have helped code systematic literature reviews and contributed to grant applications for upcoming research projects. This role has required knowledge of the principles of clinical research, federal regulations, and understanding of IRB guidelines.

As a lead board member, I manage publicity, revise rough drafts, and write my own research articles on significant topics affecting the healthcare community. In connection with the Los Angeles area, I have expanded our community engagement by partnering with local high schools to educate students on the importance of preventative medicine. This role has developed my academic writing skills as well as education surrounding research and healthcare.

As an Emergency Medical Technician, this role requires responding promptly to emergency calls, providing time-sensitive patient care and assessments of injuries and illnesses, and maintaining accurate and detailed records of each call. Patient care includes administration of Basic Life Support measures such as CPR and airway management, trauma care, following infection protocols, monitoring vital signs, safely transferring patients, deescalation and restraint application for psychiatric calls, and effective communication that utilizes cultural competence and understanding of medical terminology. As an Ambulance Driver, additional responsibilities include safe and timely ambulance operation, vehicle maintenance, navigation, and scene safety under high-pressure conditions.
