If you think we share a mutual interest do please feel free to hit the CONNECT button.I have 34 years of experience in the Accountancy sector and in the delivery of AAT training and the provision of accounting, auditing, practice management and training consultancy to the accountancy profession. This is pretty tough given that most of our apprentices are considerably younger than that - and derive great pleasure in telling me so!! Consequently I am able to advise clients on not just training, but also wider professional matters and the effective use of training and staff development within organisations. When training students I can also relate their studies to the real world and can relate to the jobs they have. When advising clients, I understand their business needs. I am an employer too!Prue and I have focussed over the last 20 years on the delivery of AAT training and Apprenticeships, and in developing practical and effective bookkeeping and accountancy training materials from induction to qualification. We are passionate about ensuring staff understand the basics and don't skimp on the underlying bookkeeping training that will provide the foundation for their future careers. We also try to make it fun. We deliver Apprenticeships in Accounting (AAT) across the South West and currently have over 100 apprentices with clients in accounting practice, industry & commerce and public sector. We are keen to grow this as we feel we have a really innovative but practical programme which has been designed to not just develop technical skills in the apprentice but to develop them as rounded accountants, with the personal skills and behaviours to support their career and make them more valuable members of their teams. We currently have venues in Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth and Falmouth but the flexible nature of our programme allows us to support apprentices employed anywhere in the South West - they range from Falmouth to Shepton Mallet to Weymouth and anywhere in-between! We've been acting for some clients, in a variety of training capacities, since 1984 and so have tons of experience of their needs as employers. Although it means I am really, really old (!?!) being a trainer forces one to be have a "young" approach to learning.In addition to this, we have over 1,000 AAT distance learning students across the UK. In 2017 we achieved pass rates of over 90% at all three levels of AAT - which was probably part of the reason why we won the AAT Champion Award at both the 2017 and 2018 AAT Training Provider Conference. (Sorry for blowing our own trumpet!). We also run a small ACA (ICAEW) training programme in Exeter.

Simon and Prue then set up Accountancy Learning Ltd to build up the current AAT distance learning business to become one of the largest in the country. Given the long relationship with clients this has lead to a re-entry into delivering apprenticeships again

I had responsibility for the development and delivery of a programme of practical staff training in accounting, tax, audit and management skills.I was also heavily involved with the performance of external review of audit and accounts files. Because we have maintained a continued strong relationship, I still perform a small number of these reviews each year. It keeps me up-to-date and in touch with the profession - which feeds into the practical approach we take to our current apprenticeship delivery - and it also allows me to keep contact with clients that I have known for over 30 years and able to provide advice beyond the purely technical.In essence I have had pretty much the same job since 1984 but just in different guises!

It seems a million years ago now but the experience I had at TMcL has served me brilliantly over the years. I was primarily involved in audit - of many well known businesses. In those days auditors rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty and it was a great place to learn all about business (and people) and to develop a questioning mind and a healthy level of professional scepticism. It developed not just technical knowledge but the ability to apply this in a range of practical applications. This "principles based" approach has fed into the file review and consultancy support I have subsequently been involved in with SWAT and also, in a different way, in the development of our courses programmes.
