About Simone Degan
My background is in Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Pathology/Histology and Anatomy. After several years in the pharmaceutical field (medical scientific advisor and clinical trials), in 2000 I enrolled in a PhD program in England to study cancer biology, pathology, and tumor development both in vitro and in patients. From 2005 to 2010 I worked at the Department of Pathology at Duke University as Research Associate investigating the pathobiology of lung diseases. Since 2010 I have been working at the Center for Molecular and Biomolecular Imaging and at the Department of Radiology (Center for In Vivo Microscopy) at Duke University Medical Center. My central work is on lung cancer and melanoma malignancies. I am principal investigator in all the melanoma preclinical trials and in vivo MRI applications for early lung cancer detection. Some of the animal cancer models I use are lung tumor induction with cancer cell lines (e.g. 4T1) or window dorsal chamber. I am very well familiar with the IACUC and AALAC procedures and in 2011 I received the Research Animal Coordinator Certification from Duke University. In 2013, I also became part of the Dermatology Department and the Skin Disease Research Center. This work involves preclinical models (e.g. BrafV600E mutation, human skin xenotransplantation in Balb/c mice) to investigate the progression/regression of the disease after treating the animals with chemotherapeutic agents. In addition, every year the Plastic Surgery Department assigns me a third year medical student to mentor and train for 10 months in order to fulfill the medical school research requirements of his/her MD program. I routinely supervise students with the molecular biology techniques most used to study cancer and give seminars on the most recent finding in the field.List of publications:National Library of Medicine: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=simone+deganResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Simone_DeganScopus: https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=23977550200ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5417-1196
