The goal was to find a way to capture and use the carbon dioxide emitted by coal’s combustion to produce methanol through formic acid.Our team has worked on different possibilities to use the carbon dioxide as a raw material and has also studied the economic and technical feasibility of this innovative project.The technology we decided to work on is based on the fact that it is possible to use the carbon dioxide to produce methanol through formic acid thanks to two catalytic reactions. Carbon dioxide will lead to formic acid and then this formic acid is used to produce methanol. This work is based on a very recent paper which was published in August 2014 and which concluded that tproduction yield of those two reactions was pretty high with a very specific catalyst.
