About Simon Dures

I am a passionate conservation scientist and filmmaker. I work with people and organisations to identify and tell stories of biodiversity conservation success.Much of my academic and applied conservation work has focussed on conservation in sub-Saharan Africa, be this working as an ecologist, doing my PhD research on the lions of the Okavango and Kalahari, or latterly, working with TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network to help increase crime scene investigation and forensics capacity for wildlife crime across the region.More recently, I have turned my attention to communicating the amazing achievements in conservation worldwide through the power of film. This has led to collaborations on amazing conservation stories, as well as the founding of the Edinburgh Conservation Film Festival (www.ecff.co.uk).If you want to talk about a conservation story you want to tell, please get in touch!

My research interests largely focus on landscape ecology and in particular how changes in the landscape, both natural and human induced, effect connectivity, diversity and population or environmental stability; all with a view to informing direct conservation action. My PhD research used a genetic approach to studying the lion population of Northern Botswana, centred around the Okavango Delta. The aim of this research was to use a single species approach to ask how natural and anthropogenic barriers to dispersal affect the current and future patterns of genomic divergence through inbreeding depression and altered ecology.
