About Simone Athayde
Dr. Athayde is an environmental anthropologist and a Research Scientist the Tropical Conservation and Development Program (TCD), in the Center for Latin American Studies, University of Florida. She is also the UF Coordinator for the Amazon Dams Network, an international network aimed at developing inter and transdisciplinary research on hydroelectric dam implementation in the Amazon. Simone is a World Social Science Fellow of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and Principal Investigator of the International Network on Indigenous Knowledge and Disaster Risk Reduction. She holds a Bachelor in Biology (Brazil), specialization in Human Ecology (Indiana University) and Environmental Education (UNILIVRE), master degrees in Botany (Brazil) and Ethnobotany (UK), and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Ecology with concentration in Anthropology from University of Florida. In the last several years, her work has been recognized with awards from the Center for Latin American Studies and TCD Programs and from the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at the University of Florida; from the Ministry of Culture in Brazil, and from the International Society of Ethnobiology. She has worked for roughly 20 years in the fields of environmental education, conservation and development of the Atlantic Forest and Amazonian regions in Brazil. Her research interests include biodiversity conservation, interdisciplinary research, integrative science, indigenous knowledge systems, ethnobotany and ethnoecology, and participatory research and management of socio-ecological systems.
