About Simone Haysom
I am the Director of Environmental Crime Programmes at the Global Initiative against Transnational Crime working on the interplay between illicit environmental flows and organised crime, and the Head of the EU-funded ECO-SOLVE project. My work focuses on building innovative responses to illicit environmental flows, drawing on new technology, and emphasising collaboration. Since I joined GI-TOC in 2017, I have been working on the use of machine-learning to detect online wildlife markets, alongside work on drugs, urban gangs, and the intersection between crime and elite corruptionI have over a decade of experience managing complex projects and conducting qualitative fieldwork in challenging environments, and five years of experience working with machine-learning technology and, recently, OSINT to monitor online phenomena. In the course of this work, I have formed and lead teams, worked with networks, and collaborated widely: with political decision makers, journalists, conservationists, academics, other civil-society actors, community activists, drug-user associations, and slum-resident associations. I fundraise, represent, and present the organisation's work in a wide range of fora.Between 2010 and 2013, I worked for the Overseas Development Institute in London, researching urban displacement in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, and humanitarian policy in conflict zones. In my role as an analyst, I have been closely involved with GITOC’s pioneering work on heroin markets in Southern and East Africa, including leading multi-country studies on the development of illicit urban markets across the region. I have also analysed the role of criminal gangs in Kenya's political system and in extorting urban markets, and mapped cross-border illicit charcoal value-chains across East Africa. I have been a Visiting Academic at the School of African Studies at the University of Oxford, and I'm currently an associate of the Oceanic Humanities for the Global South research project, based at the University of the Witwatersrand.Throughout my career, I've chosen to work on understanding and resolving the intersecting problems we face achieving justice, living in harmony with the environment and securing dignified urban development.

Rising sea levels require new styles of oceanic research and writing in the humanities, that speak simultaneously to environmental and decolonial themes.
