Rising sea levels require new styles of oceanic research and writing in the humanities, that speak simultaneously to environmental and decolonial themes. Much oceanic research focuses on the surface of the ocean, tracing movements of people, ideas and objects. But an oceanic humanities equal to the present must engage with both human and non-human aspects.

I edited Prufrock's non-fiction content, which included memoir, personal essays, long-form reportage, and experimental non-fiction writing. Launched in 2013, Prufrock was South Africa's best magazine of new writing until 2019. We published fiction, non-fiction and poetry in all of South Africa's languages.

The Miles Morland Foundation runs a yearly African writing scholarship scheme which aims to give three fiction writers and one non-fiction writer the financial freedom to complete an English-language book.
