My Master study shaped my interest in aquatic systems and microbial ecology when I was investigating the dynamics of bacterial community composition during a phytoplankton bloom in Lake Zurich. With the following Ph.D. study, I expanded my expertise in biogeochemistry of a restored riparian groundwater system. In particular, my research focused on the source, bioavailability, and microbial processing of carbon and nitrogen in the restored floodplain. The study of the river-groundwater-landscape interface added to my understanding of the mechanistic functioning of the coupling of aquatic and terrestrial carbon biogeochemical cycles. I further deepened my biogeochemical expertise during my post-doctoral work in Sweeden and Germany, where I studied redox-related coupling of iron and organic carbon biogeochemistry, also in the context of organic pollutant dynamics.Currently I can apply this broad biogeochemical knowledge in my work as a scientific specialist in an environmental laboratory, reviewing the results from the different analyses and putting them in the context of environemental legislation and advising clients on environemental analytics questions.
