About Simone Teruggi
I am a strong believer in 𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐈𝐄 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐈𝐄𝐒’ potential (𝐀𝐑, 𝐕𝐑, 𝐌𝐑) and I want to contribute to the change they bring with them. Being a fast-paced and fast-changing environment I enjoy to continuously update and learn about the last development in the field of 𝐄𝐗𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 and I am an enthusiast about trying and testing what is new on the market.I graduated in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano and I am currently enrolled in the PhD program in Architecture, Built environment and Construction Engineering at Politecnico di Milano where I am working on my thesis with the title “𝑀𝑖𝑥𝑒𝑑 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑠”. There I developed strong skills in building and deploying virtual content to the 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐒 𝟐 using the 𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 game engine together with high resolution reality-based 𝐏𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐃 𝐌𝐎𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐒 semantically enriched applying 𝐌𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 principles (supervised learning using a 𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐌 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 classifier). During the past 3 years, I have worked as a teaching assistant at Politecnico di Milano. Working with reality-based point cloud data coming from the architectural survey I focused my attention on applying innovative teaching methods that exploit 𝐕𝐑 (𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐀 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝟐) and 𝐇𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐈𝐂 𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐔𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐙𝐀𝐙𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 through 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐨𝐦 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐬 (previously Euclideon holographics) 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐌 𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 for the architectural conservation project. My previous experiences include the use of 𝟑𝐃 𝐍𝐔𝐑𝐁𝐒 reality-based models to research the potential of a 𝐕𝐑 𝐁𝐈𝐌 application in the field of Cultural Heritage. I focused on the use of the 𝐎𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐔𝐒 𝐃𝐊 𝟐 to display high-resolution 3D models enriched with information stored on a 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐒𝐐𝐋 database used inside the maintenance works performed in Milan Cathedral.𝐷𝑜 𝑛𝑜𝑡 ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑓𝑢𝑟𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎𝐒: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hcUHIEKb4ohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZXgsjIN6lQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLP9U3XRVXMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99qkn_IWekk

Phd Candidate
The work concern the application of Industry 4.0 principles to the world of CH developing a MR application to support maintenance works inside monumental environments. Nowadays there is an increasing need to access fabrication data on-site and in real-time increasing the ability for information exchange and update. Different fields benefit from the use of these technologies while the world of CH strife to keep up with applications that are mainly devoted to education and tourism. Nevertheless, if we look at monumental heritage architectures, it is possible to see that their building site is as alive as that of new constructions, with complex necessities for the planning of inspections and maintenance interventions. The research means to explore the possibility of creating an MR system to support the maintenance activities in complex monumental architectures that could be virtually scaled to the necessities of all heritage buildings. Many different problems should be tackled: the creation of the 3D model acting as the backbone of the application; the positioning of the virtual content in the real world; the referencing of data for 1:1 superimposition; the creation of a meaningful and ad hoc user interface; the connection to an external database where information is stored.First proposal of the research is to use 3D point clouds coming from the survey activity. AI made it possible to develop semi-automatic processes to enrich the point models with semantic content, mandatory to avoid a manual and time-consuming modelling process. Hence, the first part of the work focuses on the application of Machine Learning algorithms for the segmentation of huge point cloud datasets. The second part instead will deal with the definition of the necessary steps to create an MR application that could be used on-site to improve heritage management and virtual understanding allowing for rationalization of intervention planning as well as for better data management and maintenance.
