Development of process and algorithms for optimality and consistency of 3-D attitude estimation filters considering time-variant misalignment between Star Trackers (STR) and Gyros, due to thermal distortions that often occurs in missions with repetitive eclipse and sun phases.Star Trackers and Gyros have a number of complementary proprieties which makes them interesting for sensors data fusion. E.g. while a STR provides low-frequent long-term stable attitude measurements, the attitude computed from high-frequent Gyro measurement is only short-term stable. The motivation to fuse STR and Gyro is to generate long-term stable attitude estimate at Gyro measurement frequency of attenuated noise compared to the STR measurement and to optimally bridge periods where no ST measurement is available. We supposed that the thermal distortion acts only on the Gyros system introducing two new variables that influence the mutual positions of the two sensors and so an error in the attitude estimation; these variables are the misalignment, angle between the nominal Gyros frame position and the modified, and the misalignment rate, angular rate of the U frame (Gyros) respect to the B frame (Body) expressed in the U frame. The whole system is simulated in Matlab Simulink and divided in three main subsystems: Star Tracker measurements simulator, Gyros measurements simulator and the Kalman FilterThe state estimate is computed and compared using three different Kalman filters:1)Standard Kalman Filter (SKF)2)Extended Kalman Filter (EKF): uses an augmented state vector, including and estimating the two new variables3)Consider Kalman Filter (CKF): this type of filter doesn’t estimate the new variable directly, instead update the state estimates and covariance based on an estimated parameter covarianceThe observability matrix has been evaluated for all the systems. The performance parameters for the comparison of the three systems will be the accuracy and the simulation time.
