I'm interested in how science becomes technology. I like physics and computers. I enjoyed learning various aspects of Quantum Information Processing since the late 90s. I got my PhD in the then newly created Quantum Information and Computation Group at the University of Bristol, UK. My advisor was Richard Jozsa. And I have a degree in Philosophy (Logic) from the University of Florence, Italy. I was a postdoc at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) in Waterloo, Canada. I worked as a researcher or professor in various places including UC Berkeley, University of Cambridge, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Sorbonne Université. In my most recent academic post, I'm a Professor of Physics of Information at University College London (UCL), before joining Amazon Web Services (AWS). At UCL, I started Quantum Computing in the Computer Science Department, and helped growing industrial collaborations with enterprises like Google, Lockheed Martin, and Siemens. At AWS I contributed to launch Amazon Braket, the AWS Center for Quantum Computing at Caltech, the AWS Center for Quantum Networking, in partnership with Harvard University, and the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab. I had the privilege to serve in a number of international committees for funding agencies including NSERC and the European Commission, to editorial boards of Springer, World Scientific, and the Royal Society (including Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A).I co-founded Q&I and PhaseCraft, and advised some of the first startups in the quantum tech space, including Cambridge Quantum Computing, as Technical Co-Founder (now Quantinuum), and a number of private equity funds worldwide.Opinions are always my own — assuming free will.
