Interim Careers Lead
Business Crime Advisor
I worked at the Staffordshire Police Headquarters on a secondment for the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner (OPCC) on a Business Crime Helpline project. The project supported the overall Business Crime Prevention strategy that the Staffordshire Police & Crime Commissioner launched. To support the businesses who had been a victim of crime, I offered expert support and guidance on ways to prevent any further incidents as well as referring them to the accredited support services who were specialists in their field in supporting businesses get back 'on their feet'.Whilst I was seconded to the Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner I developed a collaborative working relationship with the Staffordshire Police to ensure that all businesses who were victims of crime were supported.
Enterprise
I developed an innate drive to engage with young persons on the subject of their own future since working for the “Your Future Careers Fairs” (YFCF). This project sought to bridge the gap between education, schools and businesses. I spearheaded the ‘YFCF’ project across Stoke-On-Trent & Staffordshire and found it thoroughly inspiring and rewarding. The YFCF project was part of a national project, working in partnership with the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). The aim, was to inspire young people to master their own destinies by helping to fulfil the government’s agenda of providing high quality, impartial careers information and advice to young people through the delivery of careers fairs. I organised two large careers fairs; one in North Staffordshire & one in South Staffordshire as well as 11 small careers fairs which were delivered through local high schools. The ‘YFCF’ allowed me to act as a core link between businesses and schools; facilitating relationships between education and businesses, which in turn stimulated further career activity between the two. This supported the schools to fulfil their Ofsted needs in providing consistent, high quality and impartial careers advice to young people. This has resulted in the coordination and delivery of further career days and enterprise days. Often the biggest barrier faced by businesses was a lack of the right contacts; they simply did not know who to approach at the schools. As a result of this, the Young Chamber Schools membership package has been produced to utilise the Chamber’s connections with businesses to support the careers provision for young people.
Ceramic Skills Academy Research Assistant/Administrator
I worked on the Ceramic Skills Academy (CSA) project which was set up to support the ceramic industry with the challenges that they faced, particularly in attracting the younger generation to take over the aging workforce. The aim of the CSA was to highlight the ceramic opportunities in Staffordshire to young people and help to grow and support the industry. I supported the ceraminc industry by acting as a core link between businesses, schools, colleges and careers advisors to ensure that the most up-to-date ceramic information was available to all stakeholders. I engaged and developed key relationships with local schools, colleges and careers advisors to promote the ceramic industry. This involved attending careers fairs, delivering workshops to schools as well as organising ceramic factory tours for schools and students. I was involved in supporting the development of the Ceramics Career Pathway which was created in collaboration with the ceramic industry to showcase the various career pathways available to young people. The above resulted in the narrowing of the gap between the ceramic industry and education as nearly 2000 students engaged with industry; this was through careers fairs, factory tours and school talks. In addition to this over 60 apprentices were taken on within the industry, an area where many expressed that these had previously remained unoccupied.
