About Simon Evenett

Simon Evenett is a globally-recognised expert on trade, investment, and geopolitical dynamics who can relate these developments to companies and governments. Simon works closely with companies (managements and boards) as well as governments and international organisations to make sense of this fast-changing and complex world. Although university-based, where he is an economics and strategy professor, Simon has engaged actively with decisionmakers, analysts, and the media. A distinctive feature of Simon's approach is that he has established--with fantastic colleagues and supporters--initiatives that collect up-to-date information on policy, legal, and regulatory developments affecting the cross-border flows of trade, investment, capital, and data. Simon created the Global Trade Alert (GTA) in 2009, which is now the point of reference for trade policy monitoring. In 2020 he created with Johannes Fritz the Digital Policy Alert. Subsequent initiatives include the Essential Goods Monitoring Initiative (launched during the pandemic) and the recently-launched New Industrial Policy Observatory. Along with the Max Schmidheiny Foundation and University of St. Gallen, Simon created the St Gallen Endowment for Prosperity Through Trade. Simon firmly believes that companies and officials are likely to make better decisions when public policy is more transparent and evaluated objectively. Simon also believes that the solution to pressing societal and global challenges cannot be found within any one nation--economic nationalism is the enemy of progress.Simon also created the Crux of Capitalism initiative to shed light on how profitable companies really are--going beyond traditional measures of accounting profit and constructing a modern version of an age-old concept, economic profits. This initiative, launched publicly in 2023, is yielding important insights about the performance of 21 economies worldwide and of key sectors, such as the renewables sector. In 2023 Simon was appointed Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on Trade and Investment. He will serve a two year term. In August 2024 Simon joined the faculty of IMD Business School, moving there from the University of St. Gallen where he was happily based for 19 years. Simon was educated in economics at Cambridge and Yale Universities. He has taught at Oxford University and was the first Director of Economic Research at the World Trade Institute. Simon was for 8 years the Co-Director of Europe's most established group of researchers in international trade.

For nearly 30 years, Simon Evenett has guided board members, senior executives, EMBAs, and MBAs in understanding the significant shifts in the global business environment and their implications for firm operations, performance, and strategy. As geopolitical rivalry has intensified over the past decade, Evenett has been helping companies and executives interpret these developments, evaluate their impact, and build their geopolitical acumen. He joins a growing number of IMD faculty experts committed to the same goal.To offer innovative evidence-based solutions, Evenett has developed several policy intelligence initiatives that provide real-time information on legal, policy, and regulatory developments worldwide. He founded the St. Gallen Endowment for Prosperity Through Trade (SGEPT) in partnership with the Max Schmidheiny Foundation and the University of St. Gallen, which now employs a team of around forty professionals. More details on SGEPT and its initiatives can be found in my LinkedIn profile. Additionally, he launched the Crux of Capitalism initiative in 2023, which provides insights into the performance of firms and sectors in 21 major economies.Upon joining IMD, Evenett stated, “I am excited to become part of IMD, known for its exceptional faculty and dedicated professionals who consistently create transformative experiences for individuals, companies, and governments. Initially, I will focus on the intersection of geopolitics and corporate strategy, but I also plan on sharing insights on corporate turnarounds, value-enhancement strategies, and broader issues concerning the role of business in society and the challenges facing Democratic Capitalism.”Evenett is the author and co-author of over 250 publications. He is frequently cited in global media and has published extensively in leading academic journals, including The Journal of International Business Policy, the Journal of International Economic Law, and the Journal of Political Economy.

St.Gallen Endowment For Prosperity Through Trade Nov 2020 - Present
    St Gallen, Switzerland
In November 2020 I joined forces with the Max Schmidheiny Foundation and the University of St. Gallen to found the St.Gallen Endowment. This is the home for a growing portfolio of tracking, analysis, and outreach activities relating to the regulation of modern economies. The Global Trade Alert, Digital Policy Alert, Essential Goods Initiative, and New Industrial Policy Databases are four of our higher profile initiatives. We publish reports, shorter insights papers, and share data. Most importantly, we have a fantastic team of approximately 40 members who make it happen and who I really like working with.
  • Global Trade Alert
    Founder
Global Trade Alert Mar 2009 - Present
    St. Gallen, Switzerland
I coordinate a worldwide network of independent trade policy analysts that monitor government's resort to protectionism and trade liberalisation during the recent global economic crisis. Our monitoring goes back to government decisions taken since November 2008, when G20 governments promised to refrain from protectionism (and subsequently didn't!) The GTA's work has been referred to in several hundred media reports. Over 3,000 papers and reports of official bodies have referred to the GTA work. Thousands of users have made use of the GTA database at www.globaltradealert.org, a global public good with a convenient format to download the latest information on trade policymaking.
  • University Of St Gallen

University Of St Gallen Mar 2005 - Jul 2024
For 19 years I served as a faculty member at the University of St. Gallen, teaching in their executive, economics, and international affairs programmes. For over 10 years I was the Academic Director of the St. Gallen MBA, where I worked with a great team to support the career and personal transformations of around 1,000 MBAs. During my time at St Gallen, I was a Director of the Swiss Institute for International Economics and Applied Economic Research (SIAW) and a member of the School of Economics and Political Science. I wish my former colleagues every success in the years ahead and thank them for the support I received.

    Baltimore, Maryland Area
I was honoured to be invited to visit this prestigious business school at one of the world's best research universities. In addition to meeting with growing faculty here, teaching a Global Business class to a very engaged group of MBA students, I also had the pleasure of meeting some of Johns Hopkins dedicated supporters. • Project Firefly
    Co Founder
    Project Firefly Oct 2011 - Mar 2019
With Daniel Garraty, I developed this global initiative that enables bright young talent to distinguish themselves from the pack. In an era of grade inflation where final GPAs mean less and less and when rising university tuition fees discourage bright students from poorer backgrounds to go to the most expensive universities, those committed to promoting meritocracy need to look beyond the traditional top universities. This is true for all recruiters--be they corporate, government, civil society, and even universities looking for talent for their advanced degree programmes. Through a series of carefully designed initiatives open to all university students at whatever level, Project Firefly enabled tomorrow's thought leaders to differentiate themselves from peers.
