Upon joining Atkins in September 2010 I worked with the Rail division located in Birmingham, UK. This role saw me grow from a Graduate Engineer to soon be promoted to Assistant Engineer. During my time in Birmingham I have worked on the following projects:- Midland Mainline GRIP 3 (Assistant Surveyor)- Birmingham New Street Station - South Side Development (GRIP 5)- Birmingham New Street Station Gateway Project (GRIP 6)- East-West Rail Phase 1 - CAT II checker of composite railway overbridges to Eurocodes- Wolverhampton Re-signalling - CAT III check and design of a lowering aluminium signal post to EurocodesAfter 3 years in Birmingham I became a Residential Engineer on a Class 1 nuclear project. This role involved technical support to the contractor's construction programme by responding to technical queries whilst ensuring design intent was maintained. Over the year that I was based on the project site, I was responsible for supporting a team of 3 No. Graduate Engineers and for the programming and coordination of a team of 5 No. CAD technicians.For my final year at Atkins I was working in a technical design role on the Doha Metro - Gold Line Project. This project involved the design of 13 No. underground reinforced concrete stations to the Eurocode design standard. During the project I attained a number of roles including the Design Lead for vertical elements (walls and columns) and Assistant Station Lead.

This role was based on the West Coast Route Modernisation (WCRM) project, a Network Rail project which was primarily responsible for increasing the linespeed of the West coast line between London Euston and Scotland.Despite employed by Bechtel, I was an integrated person within the Network Rail organisation. The position I attained was in the Small Projects team which had the task of closing out past projects. This involved although not limited to, collation of H&S files (CDM coordinator role), regular progress meetings with the client on individual project matters and liaising with/scoping of contractor workloads.
