However, I began my professional career as a dishwasher at the American Flatbread Company in Rockport when I was 14. This job gave me the unique experience of working in a hectic restaurant environment, and prepared me for a myriad of other jobs that I would undertake throughout my time in high school and college. Despite my intense interest in forestry and the natural world as a whole, my job experience has been incredibly diverse. I’ve been a dishwasher, a dockhand, a ski instructor, a yard worker at a plant store, a manufacturer for a playset company, a small ferry driver, a water sampling technician, an assistant river guide, a bartender at a ski shop, and a housekeeper at a hotel. When I first started out as a young employee, my dad would always repeat one of his many authentic dad quotes: “80 percent of life is showing up.” This quote has resided in my head for the past several years, and continues to guide my life as both an employee and a student. I will always show up on time for work eager to solve problems and complete tasks, regardless of my experience. I am reliable. In terms of environmental work and forestry, I’m itching for more. I’ve spent endless hours in the woods (including a NOLS course), and have had lots of academic training as a forester and silviculturist. I also lived in Ecuador for a semester, and had the privilege of exploring the vast wonders of that landscape, as well as witnessing the absence of green spaces and stormwater infrastructure in Cuenca. I’m truly desperate to learn more.
