Engineer on the Research and Development technology team

I am a senior engineer on the artificial intelligence pod, an initiative to build prototypes and machine learning pipelines to unlock new opportunities for our journalists. I work both on integrating with external APIs like OpenAI, DeepL and others, as well as building, training and using our own models to empower both rigorous data-driven reporting and engaging storytelling.

I lead the Audiovisual Storytelling team, driving innovations in multimedia production including podcasts, live video and photojournalism. Comprised of two smaller teams we support an array of applications used by our newsroom including:* News video and live breaking news video player* Photo publishing platform* Custom video presentation formats for interactive graphics stories* Sticky Audio player (used for both podcasts and embedded inline audio content in articles)* Video and podcast publishing pipeline* AI-generated audio articles* Content management systems for photo/audio/video* Ingestion for wire photos and videos from AP, Reuters, Storyful and others

I lead the video and audio engineering teams, working on our video publishing, podcast publishing and leading new efforts to explore ways to tell stories across mediums.

I work in the Post newsroom as part of the News Engineering team. As a full-stack engineer, I get to work on Node Apps, GraphQL APIs, Mongo databases, React and Angular front-ends, as well as plenty of good old (and new ES6/7!) Javascript and Python. I helped develop our SVG election return maps generated through a homespun artisanal d3/mapshaper makefile. Catch me on a primary election night staring at a dashboard and tweaking stray pixels on our results pages.

As a part of the site engineering team, I helped re-platform our article pages, implemented new analytics features and served as part of the backend on-call rotation, forever fortifying The Post's array of servers and databases.

I managed development of new CMS features and templates based in PHP for a Wordpress publishing platform and produced data visualizations based in D3 and Carto.js, assisted the communications team in editing and producing a video series highlighting issues around economic mobility, labor rights and eduction policy.

During a 2-month contract, I developed Wordpress themes and modules, including integrations with the Google Maps and Twitter APIs, and front-end goodies such as scroll-based animations and interstitial parallax videos.

Improving the impact of nonprofits by better leveraging their data and technology.* Building web applications from concept to development to UX testing to production, managing a team of designers and back-end developers, taking data-driven web strategy to inform the construction of platforms that are intuitive for both users and staff alike.* Maintaining the codebases for 6-10 sites, performing code updates and debugging runtime errors.* Managing digital marketing and analytics reporting for medium and small nonprofits to raise engagement and search engine visibility for their often overlooked web platforms.* Helped grow the company from 2 to 8 people, to meet demand from dozens of organizations to build and improve their online platforms. Leading the technology team, trained and served as mentor for new staff members, reporting to the chief of the company.* Building websites using PHP, Javascript, Python, Ruby, HTML5, CSS/LESS, MySQL, Drupal, Wordpress, Git, AWS, Bash/UNIX programming.* Contributed to Huffington Post ‘Impact’ column on behalf of the director.

Wrote and edited grant proposals for ongoing and future research projects, both reaching out to potential donors and providing logistical support to supervising post-doctorate in charge of fundraising. Aggregated hundreds of medical research papers to support investigative techniques for developing studies. Recorded and maintained extensive collections of data, managing and compiling spreadsheets into reports and presentations for Attending Physicians.

Generated written content for non-profit's website and helped manage CSS theme. Researched and composed educational briefings and maintained website for transnational non-governmental organization educating peacemakers in Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Somalia. Managed website banners as part of ongoing fundraising effort Acted as technical advisor for director, both assembling a multi-computer networked US office and maintaining an older technological system in London.

Maintained Microsoft Excel and Access-based databases of over 2,000 international press contacts for communications director. Composed hundreds of press briefings and managed design of the coalition's website and its social media presence via Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Wordpress and other blogs. Gathered testimony and media from victims of cluster bombs in Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, and Lebanon through interviews with local journalists and extracting written evidence from a network of non-governmental activists for use in lobbying campaign.
