I monitor the operation of the Mental Health Act in the South region by visiting hospitals and speaking with detained patients in private.

I am part of the Surrey and Sussex team visiting detained patients and interviewing them in private, carrying out the functions of the CQC under section 120 Mental Health Act 1983.

I run my own company providing training and supervision. AMHP refresher training on aspects of forensic social work and the social supervision of restricted patients.

I currently teach the mental health law unit on the London Approved Mental Health Professional course.

Member of the local Approved Mental Health Professional rota and AMHP lead. Chair local AMHP meetings and co-ordinate AMHP refresher training. Practice assessor for AMHP trainees. Lead on mental health law including the implementation of the Mental Health Act 2007 and Mental Capacity Act 2005. I supervise social supervisors and forensic social workers. I am also part of the management for the local Community Mental Health Team.

Set up and managed the local crisis resolution and home treatment service (IRIS) from January 2003. I wrote an extensive report, Alternative to Admissions in Mental Health, which involved a survey of service users, carers and mental health professionals on exploring their experiences of in-patient care and alternatives, as well as an audit of admissions to the local psychiatric unit in 2003.

I was responsible for the assessment and care of clients who presented in crisis as part of a multi disciplinary extended hours mental health crisis team. I was also on the local Approved Social Worker rota. During this time I also acted as a practice supervisor for two DipSW students and was tutoring three students on the Hampshire ASW course. I undertook an audit of the use of the local psychiatric unit as a place of safety under sections 135 and 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
