Photonic Pharma is a biotech startup company founded by licensing intellectual property that resulted from my graduate work at the University of Minnesota. The company immediately secured a seven-figure contract with a major pharma partner to build on drug screening methods I developed in collaboration with engineers from Fluorescence Innovations.My responsibilities as a consultant include analyzing the need and negotiating in-licensing agreements for the use of research tools from both academia and industry, helping to create pitch decks for investor/conference presentations, providing input on research directions, and pursuing additional agreements with large pharma and biotech partners.

Evaluated novel small molecules (discovered and developed during my time at U of MN) for the treatment of heart failure in animal models. Analyzing gene expression and protein-protein interactions that contribute to heart failure and diabetic cardiomyopathy. Key methods include Seahorse metabolic assays, qPCR, western blots, cell culture, and small animal models.

Used novel protein engineering methods to generate fluorescent fusion proteins for assay validation and drug discovery in a high-throughput fluorescence plate-reader developed at the U of MN. Managed several new academic collaborations to find small-molecule activators/inhibitors of various new targets for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and ataxia. Developed cell culture methods for screening and evaluating new stable clones and optimized conditions to obtain fluorescence data from cells equal to (or better than) in vitro methods using commercial instruments. Involved in intellectual property filings, validating assays for FDA approval, and securing grant funding from commercial partners as well as the NIH.

Received a PhD in Biophysics studying with Dave Thomas at the University of Minnesota. The Thomas lab studies proteins involved in calcium cycling and muscle contraction/relaxation. My thesis projects focused on calcium cycling deficiencies in heart failure and the use of gene therapy and small molecule drugs to improve muscle relaxation and overall function. Received support from the American Heart Association for three years as a predoctoral fellowship. The funding was connected to my project developing competitive mutant Phospholamban proteins for gene therapy treatment of heart failure.

Worked on a high-throughput drug screening project funded by Celladon, Inc., searching for a small molecule activator of the cardiac Ca-ATPase. Helped develop secondary activity-based screens for drug candidates. Tested efficacy of recombinant Adeno-Associated Virus for use in human gene therapy clinical trials (currently ongoing).

Worked in Quality Assurance, testing concentrations of vitamins and minerals in medical nutrition products. Used a variety of methods, primarily HPLC, ICP and spectroscopy. Helped troubleshoot several assays and set up a new testing facility at the site of manufacturing.
