Fastline Group is a global specialist in the provision of leisure entertainment offering services such as go kart & laser tag turnkey solutions, Venue Management Software for multi-activity centres, FECs and Theme Parks, rides arcade and redemption games. Simon's role at Fastline is to oversee the various distribution relationships, manage the global sales team, manage various key customer accounts and produce various marketing materials.

ROC is a global organisation which provides timing and venue management software to the go kart and amusement industries. Simon is responsible for their various marketing endeavours including; catalogues, web site and trade shows. He also assists in the management of the sales team including making sales calls and managing a number of customer accounts. In addition to these duties he oversees the technical area providing management support and new product development direction. Simon is also charged with developing a number of management systems for the organisation.

This engagement involved auditing the organisation against the nine capabilities of Excellence DNA and developing a communication plan to build internal knowledge and support for the program. The audit methodology included; interviewing a wide range of senior executive and managers, conducting an organisational wide survey and an extensive archival data review. Results benchmarked the organisation on each of the Excellence DNA model’s nine elements and against the First XI organisations. Recommendations focused on the most critical capability gaps were. The client organisation then worked with Simon on building their strategic capabilities which included several strategy sessions with senior executives focusing on the future direction of the organisation. In addition Simon worked with the leadership team in documenting, debating, setting and communicating the vision or direction of the organisation.

Analysis and review of the global gaming market, including strategic options to facilitate achieving corporate growth objectives. This was a team based assignment, where Simon was placed in charge of a team of internal people to develop a global strategic review process and initial report for the organisation. Structures for data collection and analysis were developed, the internal team was trained and developed in strategic theory and how the process worked. An initial report was generated, including recommend strategic options and presented to the board. During this study Simon also developed a conceptual model of the gaming industry lifecycle, which the organisation uses for analysing strategic decisions.

Taking the lead from the US bestseller Built to Last, The First XI; provides insight into and examples of the inner workings of eleven winning Australian organisations. The findings are organised into a clear coherent framework consisting of the nine core elements Australian organisations need to win. This winning wheel framework provides managers with a rigorous, comprehensive, challenging, but practical framework to improve their own organisational practice and performance. Both Macquarie Bank and National Australia Bank were members of the First XI and Simon has studied both organisations for a period of 20 years to understand their internal workings and what sets them apart from other less successful financial institutions.
