Profile bio

About Simon Joe Portal

My experience covers humanitarian and private sector programme management, innovation research and implementation, human-centred design, circular economy, energy systems and construction. I've worked in France, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, UK, Zimbabwe and am an experienced facilitator focused on building collaborations across sectors, actors and disciplines. I became an engineer because I'm passionate about listening and wanted the tools to be able to participate practically. You're equally likely to find me playing football in the slums of Kampala as in a glass-walled board room in central London. I believe the most interesting solutions are found through conversation and simple human interaction, and that you know good engineering when it looks easy.My favourite sports I'm very much an amateur at, and the one I pursued professionally I don't have time for: I realised that the rest of the world was too interesting to spend my life between four lines. I love the outdoors, have lived in a van, a tent, a slum, on a floor and many-a-couch and loved each one of them. Our idea of a honeymoon was 10 days self-sufficient kayaking Fjords in Greenland and 2 weeks sailing from Svalbard to Tromso. I love a good conversation (try me!), shared interests, hearing about what you're passionate about and ruminating how the many small stories that make up human society fit into a bigger picture. My aim is to make that bigger picture a little more beautiful.

Listed skills include Engineering, Renewable Energy, Energy, Sustainability, and 10 others.
