I set up Pulse 20 years ago to help business leaders build more purposeful organisations capable of delivering both profit and positive change in the world. In a world where customers, investors, employees and wider society is expecting or demanding so much more from a business and their leaders we help our clients navigate the transition to more sustainable ways of operating. Pulse has now built nearly two decades of experience in the purposeful space around issues like climate change, rising inequality and helping to shift internal cultures into new more helpful ways of thinking.Prior to setting up Pulse I had worked with major corporations like the Dow Chemical Company, Tata Steel and Alibaba. I learnt to navigate and understand how large corporations operate. It became increasingly clear the need for business to be braver and longer-term in their thinking. Profit alone was not good enough. It was also clear government and the social sector could only go so far.Business has often been ridiculed for being both short-term and largely focused on delivering profit. But my experience was very different. How could we build a world we want to live in without the steel to build our railway lines, the plastic to keep our food fresh or the energy to keep the lights on etc.Since setting up Pulse we have supported organisations like bp, Thomson Reuters, Oki and Glencore to major investors like Permira, LGT and Schroders. With Sir Damon Buffini I helped to set up the Social Business Trust ten years ago. Most recently I set up a new not for profit organisation called MovingBeyond designed to accelerate the energy transition here in the UK.Over the last four or five years my personal focus has been more on helping to support purposeful movements that brings business, investors, policy makers and civic society together to create the change we need to see.
