Profile bio

About Simonne Varela, M.Eng., Eit

I am a young professional working within the Buildings industry, passionate about purposeful climate action work and achieving energy efficiency in buildings. My educational background from both an Undergraduate and Masters degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto focused on building enclosure designs and sustainability. I recently started a role as a Building Performance Analyst at Pratus Group and am excited to be providing energy modelling and sustainability strategy services to clients. I also have previous consulting experience within various sectors of the Civil Engineering Industry. Outside of work, I am a Team Co-Lead of the Emerging Green Professionals Committee with the CAGBC where my team and I organize various events for young professionals in the "Green Building" industry. Over the past few years, I have helped coordinate the committee's Design Charette, where the challenge was focused on creating a Climate Action Plan for a Post Secondary Campus to sustain its student population growth and reduce its impact to the environment. I also assist in coordinating the Mentorship Program, which connects young professionals and students to industry leaders to offer guidance and advice, and have organized a Speaker Series event pertaining to Whole Building Life Cycle Assessments. As being a student leader during my time at school was a prominent part of my University experience, I enjoy volunteering my time at the University of Toronto through mentoring current students and new graduates. I also participate in alumni events organized by the Civil and Mineral Engineering Department such as alumni panels and career fairs. During my spare time, I enjoy sketching, creating art work, journaling, cake decorating and event planning. I also love spending time outdoors when I can.
