In 2021, I began a Degree Apprenticeship in Software Engineering. I worked with a small team of engineers on a novel software project which attempts to rethink traditional database structures leveraging a graph-based approach. Gwynant Ltd operate a popular park at the centre of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. As Assistant General Manager, I was responsible for maintaining the IT infrastructure of the park, book keeping and accounts, office management, HR and customer relations. Throughout the 5 years I spent with Gwynant, my colleague and I modernised the operation. We migrated from paperbased to electronic booking management, constructed a retail outlet on the park, constructed a food outlet, modernised the park amenities, and moved to a pre-booking model. These changes resulted in a significant upturn in park revenue as the park became more resilient to adverse conditions such as weather.Most importantly, the modernisation exposed me to software development for the first time. Park operations were unusually structured so it was difficult to find out-of-the-box systems which could accommodate the intricacies of the park. As such, we needed to build our own. In house, using Python, we developed an interface between an off-the-shelf booking system and our park access barrier system. I also built Python scripts which extracted various performance metrics from our booking system so that comparison metrics could be maintained. This sparked an interest which had been bubbling beneath the surface for a number of years. After long hours spent exploring C, Python, HTML, CSS & JavaScript, I decided to take the plunge and enrol at Bangor University to study Software Engineering.

The venture brought together leading members of the property industry, enforcement agencies and other related parties to discuss issues effecting the investment in and management of UK and continental property.
