Simon has sole responsibility for the management systems for Quality, Health and Safety and the Environment. He leads on improvements to the Standard Operating Procedures and Plans of Work and Risk Assessments. He ensures the systematic and structured recording, reporting and analysis of data. This has resulted in targeted training, improving staff competence and better control of the risk arising from the removal of asbestos. Conducting thorough Audits is integral to his approach to the role and during these he engages with staff to discuss any issues they have or initiatives that may be forthcoming.Simon is responsible for maintaining certification and accreditation. He has delivered successful renewal of the company’s HSE Licence to undertake work with asbestos, SSIP accreditation and Gold Member status with ConstructionLine. He is instrumental in bid preparation, ensuring that the vital evidence is provided to support tenders and client requirements are met during the lifetime of contracts.

Simon was the Internal Lead for Health and Safety within the Hyder Consulting UK Limited / Arcadis Highways and Aviation Sector. He worked on numerous projects, and as advisor to the Sector Management Team. He provided advice and proposals to maximise performance and deliver improvements for clients at all stages of construction.Simon effectively administered the Health and Safety aspects of projects for several clients. He ensured identification of risk using a collaborative approach and delivered timely and long-term solutions. He was instrumental in promoting Health, Safety and Wellbeing to both clients and the supply chain. He advised on changes to technical guidance documents, and on specific projects for National Highways. These included some of the Smart Motorway Schemes where he developed the Health and Safety Management System, carried out Risk Assessment and Method Statement reviews, prepared Asbestos Management Plans. He also provided bespoke H&S training to Arcadis Project Managers and staff on identifying and managing risks, and how to adhere to the requirements of relevant regulations. Simon was a lead part of the winning team when bidding for the Lower Thames Crossing contract. He helped to establish the Health, Safety, and Wellbeing goals, and find long term solutions to meet the client’s requirements. In addition, he successfully delivered IOSH Managing Safely Training to the Joint Venture Management Team. Simon was an active member of People First, the employee consultation group. He worked with management and colleagues throughout the business to develop and improve policies and identify and lead innovations within the business for lone workers and home workers. He ensured communication and employee engagement was maintained during major change, reporting back to colleagues, and feeding back to management.Simon was also a key figure within the Arcadis UK Charity Board and led the selection of the Charity of the Year.

As Sector H&S Coordinator, I was responsible for the the Highways, Transportation and Structures H&S, reporting to the SHEQ Director and the Business Sector Director. Roles and responsibilities included promoting and developing the H&S Culture within the sector, reviewing and developing KPIs with the Sector Management Team, proposing and implementing measures to improve the H&S of the sector staff and issuing bulletins and safety alerts as required. I was heavily involved in writing and developing bid documentation ensuring that H&S is seen as integral part of any contract into which we entered.I carried out the role of H&S Advisor to the client (Telecoms) and assisted their suppliers, and was in charge of the team of site and document auditors ensuring compliance with CDM regulations. I led site safety audits of sites for all telecoms site builds for the client's special coverage team.I have acted as CDMC for other projects (non Telecoms) as required for various clients including The National Trust, the Environment Agency and local authorities, covering the construction of dams, commercial structures and street furniture.

As a Director of Pepper Events Ltd, the wholly owned subsidiary and trading company for the Pepper Foundation, I had ultimate responsibility for health and safety of those volunteering or attending our events. For our larger scale events I had a direct role as the Health and Safety Officer in ensuring the health and safety of all those involved. These events included rock concerts, fun runs, sponsored walks, and classical music events to name but a few, with audiences of up to 500 people, and support teams of up to 300 on any one event. I also provided practical support and advice to those fundraising on behalf of the Pepper Foundation.

Advised and audited on H&S, Quality and Environmental issues for the UK arm of this multinational construction business and represented the UK when liaising with European colleagues, primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. My main responsibilities were legislative and regulatory compliance, procedures and policy development and continuous improvement, incident management and investigation; site safety audits and contractor liaison.I was heavily involved with the client (a major telecoms network operator) and their H&S and CDM teams, and also with other clients, including NATS, both of whom we worked for as D&B contractors.

H&S Advisor to 14 different business areas providing services to the local authority for 500+ employees working in operations ranging from Highways Maintenance to Catering, and from Grounds Maintenance to Street Cleaning. I was instrumental in the business gaining certification to BS18001, along with ISO14001 and ISO9001 and our Integrated Management System. Working with managers and Trades Union representatives I managed the health and safety committee, and chaired the monthly meetings with department heads, both leading to continual improvement of the IMS, reductions in incidents and increased reporting of 'near misses'

A founding Trustee and Director of the charitable company who funded Pepper Nurses, paediatric nurses providing care for the long-term sick and terminally ill children in the Chilterns in their own homes. We quickly became one of the top 10% of income generating charities, raising funds initially through a series of annual charity rock concerts, featuring upwards of 300 local amateur and semi-pro musicians, volunteer technical crew, front of house, stewards, bar staff, caterers etc etc. and an audience of 500 per night. This was my introduction to health and safety and I took on the lead on this for a number of years, both as a trustee, a volunteer, and later as a director of Pepper Events Ltd, the trading company wholly owned by the Pepper Foundation.
