Most recently Director of Operations at UK Biobank, I have a range of expertise and experience gained from over 20 years in the life sciences sector plus experience of working within both public funded business support environments and “high-tech” university & corporate “starburst” companies.A physicist by training, I graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Physics with Physical Electronics from Bath University of Science and Technology in 1986 and remained at Bath for my doctoral research. Since then, and prior to my time at UK Biobank, my career spanned: - Project, Product, Sales and Business Development Management roles within a leading supplier of automation systems to the life science industry - Management of UK Government and EU funded business support initiatives including the design, development and delivery of innovation, technology and design support programmes for SMEs in the NW of England - Management of technology transfer projects and machine test programmes including design, commissioning and operation of a world leading high speed energy storage flywheel test facility - Management of R&D and manufacturing, including the transitioning of a thin film magnetoresistive sensor production facility from a (university spin out) clean room research environment to a manufacturing unit within an ISO9001 certificated operation Prior to joining UK Biobank, I was involved with various academic steering groups, was a member of (and chaired) the audit committee of the Association for Laboratory Automation (now merged with the SBS to form SLAS) and was closely involved with SiLA (a consortium working towards Standardisation in Laboratory Automation). I have published a number of papers in peer reviewed scientific journals, presented papers and posters at numerous international conferences and exhibitions, provided copy and content to the scientific press and am a named inventor on the patent for the automated blood fractionation technologies employed at UK Biobank - see Orcid account for details (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8925-8280)

It is the most detailed, long-term prospective health research study in the world, enabling the international scientific community to better understand a range of common and life-threatening diseases. The database, which is regularly augmented with additional data, is globally accessible to approved researchers and scientists undertaking vital research into the most common and life-threatening diseases. UK Biobank’s research resource is a major contributor to the advancement of modern medicine and treatment and has enabled several scientific discoveries that improve human health.Since 2006, UK Biobank has collected an unprecedented amount of biological and medical data on half a million people, aged between 40 and 69 years old and living in the UK, as part of a large-scale prospective study. With their consent they regularly provide blood, urine and saliva samples, as well as detailed information about their lifestyle which is then linked to their health-related records to provide a deeper understanding of how individuals experience diseases.The data – the largest and richest dataset of its kind – is anonymised and made widely accessible by UK Biobank to researchers around the world who use it to make new scientific discoveries about common and life-threatening diseases – such as cancer, heart disease and stroke – in order to improve public health.UK Biobank has achieved these ambitions through the support of its visionary funders, the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, Department of Health, Scottish Government, and the Northwest Regional Development Agency. The organisation has over 200 dedicated members of staff, based in multiple locations across the UK. -
