Since 2015, I have been dreaming of the day when Australia would take advantage of its abundant natural and mineral resources, and add the secret sauce of homegrown Intellectual Property, to create value-added energy harvesting, conversion, and storage products & services for sale, all around the world. That dream started coming to reality in August 2017, when I was privileged to co-found PowerPlus Energy with my then business partner Bradley Paton. The vision in 2017 was to produce LFP (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) battery packs and energy storage products for both the local Australian and overseas markets. This is no longer just a dream, because PowerPlus Energy has become a successful and well-known Australian LFP battery brand, supplying quality products to downstream partners all over Australia and beyond. After my departure from PowerPlus Energy, I’ve started working with various forward-thinking technology partners overseas and at home, to prepare ourselves for the global commoditisation of the BESS (battery energy storage systems) market. As the cost of Lithium ion cells continues to fall rapidly, and as new products based on LMFP, Sodium ion, solid state and other large format power storage cells begin to penetrate the BESS market, careful thought and planning need to be given to bigger picture, systems-level issues such as: product maintainability and system longevity, fire and electrical safety, backwards compatibility and interoperability, end-of-life planning and management, as well as multi-chemistry energy storage solutions. The world is now standing at the intersection of many competing battery technologies, so it is a critical time to start designing, manufacturing and deploying solutions that will last the next 10 to 20 years. We must leave our children and their children a wonderful legacy - not a massive mess to mop up.For those who have known me for a while, I try to live by my personal motto: “There has to be a better way…” -- Let’s find that better way today, together!

Consultant Electronic Systems EngineerInnov.Aero Jan 2017 - Dec 2017Kardinya, Western Australia, AuElectronic systems design and development for an innovative Australian geospatial image capture system invented by SpookFish Ltd (ASX:SFI).Working with an amazing team of people to integrate complex aerodynamics, incredible mechanics, mission critical electronics that have to fly to great altitudes, which are controlled by ingenious real-time firmware, command and control software and web services, just to capture billions of pixels in glorious colour in real time...Then don't forget the enormous amount of IT and data processing power running highly efficient software back on terra firma after each flight to turn the collected pixels into 3D maps that you and I can use every day. -
Chief EngineerRadlink Communications Jan 2013 - Dec 2016Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Newcastle, Mackay, Newman, Moranbah, Wangaratta, Castlemaine, Melbourne, AuRadlink Communications -- genZ EnergyIt has been noted by many industry leaders that lead acid battery systems are not 100% fit-for-purpose in Australia's harsh outback environment, where many standalone critical communications systems are located today. These systems suffer from a relatively short life due to inherent weaknesses in battery chemistry under high temperature scenarios. The cost of maintenance and frequent replacement of these batteries make them less than ideal as long term energy storage solutions.Since 2015, Radlink Communications has been experimenting with energy storage systems using revolutionary battery technologies. We took on the challenge of reimagining what a safe, reliable and cost-effective energy storage system would look like.Today, Radlink is recognised as a leader in the development and supply of 19-inch rack mounted Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery systems that are modular, scalable and most importantly, safe, reliable and cost-effective.Using LFP cells sourced from our tier-one Lithium battery manufacturing partner in China, Radlink has created the genZ range of 12.8V, 25.6V and 51.2V batteries in various form factors for use in extreme environmental conditions. These batteries are designed to be backwards compatible* and replace existing 12V, 24V and 48V lead acid solutions with minimum fuss and system redesign. The genZ range of energy-dense 51.2V 2kWh and 3kWh 19-in rack mounted batteries are designed to co-locate in the same cabinet with your inverters and chargers to enable a seamless energy storage system that does not require special cooling or maintenance. To ensure the best performance and longest life, all our genZ batteries are fitted with on-board Battery Management Systems (BMS) to protect the batteries from:- Over-charging- Over-discharging- Over-temperature- Over-current (including short circuit)- Unbalanced cells*Backwards compatibility is highly dependent on your existing battery system design. -
