POSITION: ELECTRICAL TECHNICIANI am undergoing training and gaining exposure in various sections of Msunduzi Electricity department for a period of three (3) years since May 2017MV SYSTEM STRENGTHENING AND NETWORK REINFORCEMENTDuties:Preparing drawings (cable route, proposed substations act),Preparing bid specification report for the entire project (price, duration, switchgear act),Appoint competent contractor to do the work (trenching, cable laying, and equipping substation),Updating line diagram (11kV supply network)TEST AND PROTECTIONFault locating using surge Generator,Medium to low voltage Transformer Testing before commission (Insulation between Medium voltage and low voltage sides, voltage injection and performance of output voltages according to tap changing),conduct instrument transformer testing (C.T, demagnetizing, Primary injection of power, secondary injection and arc testing),trip testing on circuit breakers,Medium voltage insulation testing to see if the cable can handle the maximum voltage and current according to it ratings,Relay programming to open to isolate the fault and give warnings to control room once fault is detected CONTROL OFFICEDuties: Use of Supervisory Control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to do the followings:Monitor 132 KV overhead incoming lines supply Msunduzi Network,Monitor 33KV overhead out going lines supplying Msunduzi Distribution substations,Monitor 88KV overhead outgoing lines supplying Distribution substations,Monitor all 11kV commercial and Industrial MV loads supplied by Msunduzi Electricity,Network load balancing and load sheading Section: CUSTOMER APPLICATION SERVICES,Planning for new electricity supply to varies loads (domestic, commercial and industrial),Site Inspection for competence installed meter boxes,Planning for Isolation of Power to customers for emergency cases,Planning for Re-placement of stolen Low voltage cable and meters.

Railway electronic/electrical signaling system is an open loop control system SCADA used to operate trains robots from centralized traffic control office to remote train stations by transmitting controlling signals on optic fibre network using light link modems, backed up by GPRS network using GPRS modems and some stations still using telephone network using frequency modulation,Demodulation • DC Motor: DC motors with brushes, Dynamic breaking that use back EMF, Mark 1 stations, switchmatic B1 and E63.• AC Motor 380v three phase: Physical breaking using electromagnetism, Used in Mark 1c and Mark M and Switchmatic B1 and E63.• Jointed Jeumont track circuit: Wired (Power supply, TX, TX track side box, RX track side box, receiver unit, Track relay on work bench), Used integrator for testing at Clairwood station (tested for staggering at Clairwood station), Jumpering on double sleep and crossings following a signal leg.• Cable: 0.6 mm diameter outdoors solid cables. Testing cable (insulation between cores and earth, continuity, insulation between each core, loop resistance). Cable jointing (used “scotch cast” cable jointing kit).• Point Machine: We built a switchmatic B1 from scratch except the worm gear. Assembled internal component (110v DC motor and snubbing unit) and assembly external component (slides, drive rod, lock rod, long detection rod and short detection rod).• Relay interlocking: Spoorplan Mark 1 setting route (spoor 5/15 block and overlap stack CR, spoor 1 point initialising, spoor 6/16 flank search, spoor 7/17 flank indication, spoor 11 route proving). Operating signal (spoor 8/18 route locking, spoor 9/19 dropping FSR’s and TSR’s, spoor 3 clearing signal, spoor 13 track proving, spoor 4 operating signal. Outgoing circuit (tested and followed signal at Umbongitwini) and Train cancellation (spoor 10/20 dropping route set and pick up spoor 9/19). • Mark M AG and WZ unit maintenance
