My team was responsible for the development of features that enable users to contribute factual edits to the map (roads, businesses, hours, etc.) as well as share their real world experiences with other users (photos, reviews, posts, q&a, etc.). The systems we built handled contributions from 100M's of users across the globe making 1B's of contributions every year. We owned the problems of converting user intent to useful contributions, moderating user contributions to establish the quality of information provided, re-engaging users to make more contributions as well as the underlying infrastructure to collect, process and serve the contributions.

Background: The Payments Customer Engineering (PCE) team is at the heart of what PayPal does and handles most payment transactions that involve PayPal. Its mission is to deliver a great customer experience while ensuring high availability and extreme reliability. Consequently, it is a high stakes and high-energy environment employing innovative ideas and cutting edge technologies. Accomplishments: * Managed the development of PayPal's Digital Goods offerings including the Zong and Payments Hub products. Launched several new features and expanded to new countries while servicing critical technical debt.* Established a high-bar talent recruitment culture and processes for the organization. Recruited several strong professionals, recent college graduates and summer interns. * Established a metrics dashboard to encourage a metrics driven culture for the organization. Dashboard helped engineers and managers get all relevant product, engineering and operations metrics from one place.* Helped design and implement a global location strategy for the organization.

Background: X.commerce was a new business unit established in order to develop and implement a platform strategy for eBay Inc. around the acquisition of Magento Commerce.Accomplishments: * Successfully launched the first version of a novel cloud-based integration platform designed to help merchants seamlessly leverage multiple applications, services and channels to run their business. * Key innovations were an asynchronous publish-subscribe infrastructure called the X.commerce Fabric and an integration language called X.commerce Open Commerce Language (XOCL). * Magento merchants were able to leverage several eBay Inc. and partner capabilities via the integration platform.* Built a product management organization with around 15 product managers. Also managed developer tech support and documentation.* Due to a change in priorities, further work on the platform was suspended.

Background: The Application Platform team was established in the fall of 09. It was charged with establishing a new internal business services platform for eBay Marketplaces to enable more rapid and agile development of vertical web and mobile consumer experiences. It was also given responsibility for the eBay Developer Program products with a goal of better aligning the external services offered by the program with internal services.Accomplishments: * Successfully launched and iterated on the eBay Application Platform and supported the launch of a new eBay Fashion vertical (http://fashion.ebay.com) on the platform. * Supported the launch of new features on existing verticals such as eBay Motors (http://motors.ebay.com) and eBay Mobile apps.* Oversaw the growth of eBay GMV via 3P apps using eBay APIs from approx. $5B to over $6B.* Launched eBay’s App Store (http://apps.ebay.com) and grew the subscriber base to over 500K sellers generating over a million app subscriptions for external app developers.* Worked with the eBay seller tools team to launch a new program to simplify onboarding of merchants called the Merchant Integration Platform. Adoption of the platform has exceeded all expectations since launch.* Designed and developed a comprehensive metrics dashboard to identify the most valuable external developers and ensure they were getting the right level of support to be successful and grow eBay revenues.* Worked with the eBay Partner Network team to launch a new mobile affiliate program for iOS and Android app developers.* Built a product management organization with around 10 product managers. Background: Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers on demand infrastructure services such as compute (Amazon EC2), storage (Amazon S3), database (Amazon SimpleDB) and queuing (Amazon SQS). My team's mission was to build, maintain and operate shared Tier-1 services for authentication and authorization of all customer requests to AWS. Accomplishments: * Successfully launched a new management repository for securely storing and managing all AWS customer credentials. The management repository enabled new features for customers like key rotation.* Successfully launched a multi-factor authentication feature (aws.amazon.com/mfa) for customers to securely access AWS websites and applications.* Established a partnership with a device manufacturer (Gemalto) to directly sell and fulfill devices needed for multi-factor authentication to AWS customers.

Background: Apigee offers a cloud/appliance solution for businesses to monitor and manage their external APIs and developer programs. When I joined Apigee, the company was selling a first generation product that was focused on the Service Oriented Architecture market. It was targeted at Enterprise Architects and required development skills. Because of lackluster sales, the team needed to define and execute on a new product strategy.Accomplishments: * Successfully launched a completely redesigned product portfolio targeted towards the rapidly growing market of external APIs and developer programs. The redesigned product was simpler to use, had more features and offered a customer experience appropriate to each customer role – architecture/development, network/systems administrators and business owners.* The revised product strategy has proven to be far more successful for the company and resulted in rapid revenue growth with marquee clients such as AT&T, eBay, Best Buy and Morningstar.* Built a product management organization across the US and India with approx. 10 product managers, user experience designers and technical writers.

Background: Anthill was a Web 2.0 venture aiming to provide a next generation product recommendation engine based on social shopping concepts. Accomplishments: * Developed a novel algorithm that combined social networking, natural language processing and information retrieval concepts. A key component of the algorithm was the notion of a people rank similar to Google's page rank that weighted individual opinions based on a credibility score.* Designed and implemented a fully working prototype system that demonstrated the full power of the algorithm. However, the venture had to be suspended due to lack of funding.

Background: The AIM division is mainly responsible for developing the WebSphere Application Server and its back-end integration server – WebSphere Process Server. The WebSphere Technology Institute reports to the CTO for AIM and is responsible for cultivating the future of the WebSphere platform. Accomplishments: * Authored a series of whitepapers outlining strategies that could be pursued around open source and Web 2.0 and got buy in from senior executives and technical team members on these strategies. * Strategies included supporting PHP on WebSphere, incorporating open source components from Apache into WebSphere and adding support for REST, AJAX and ATOM in WebSphere. Developed prototypes in support of the proposed product offerings and/or product changes.* Communicated the strategies to internal teams so they could execute on them and to customers so they could understand the future direction for our product offerings

Background: IBM’s Software Group Architecture Board is a team of senior engineers drawn from various divisions that collectively sets the technical direction for IBM’s software product portfolio. The Board is focused on ensuring good synergies between the various product teams as we work together to produce a well-integrated software platform. I represented the Lotus and AIM divisions on the board. Accomplishments: * Led a workgroup responsible for developing a Human to Service interface component (the Human Task Manager component) that allows Humans to consume and implement Services in a Service-Oriented Architecture environment.* Led a workgroup responsible for setting a strategy for E-Forms processing across the product portfolio.* Led a workgroup responsible for setting a strategy for a common UI framework across the product portfolio.

Background: IBM’s Lotus division is responsible for developing IBM’s user facing product portfolio. Key product families in Lotus are the Portal and Workplace products. Portal represents a framework for creating and managing component based user interfaces and Workplace represents a framework of collaborative services like email, instant messaging, web conferencing, discussion forums, etc that increase user productivity. Accomplishments: * Developed a key architectural concept in Portal called the Property Broker that allows independently developed user interface components (called Portlets) to be integrated easily either by the end-user (through a feature called Click-To-Action or C2A) or by the developer of a Portal based application. This concept is now part of the JSR for Portlets.* Developed a technology called the WebSphere Portal Application Integrator (WPAI) that solved the problem of rapid integration of existing applications and data into the Portal using the concept of re-usable patterns. WPAI provided users with Portlets (called Portlet Builders) whose point-and-click interface could be used to rapidly build custom Portlets that connected to existing applications (like SAP, PeopleSoft, Siebel, etc).* Led efforts around establishing easy to use development tools for Portal and Workplace targeted for low skill programmers and non-programmers – the Workplace Designer product and the Rational Application Developer product were used to deliver new capabilities based on these efforts. * Led an effort to establish a unified programming model for front-end aggregation and composition in the Portal and Workplace platforms that encapsulated a lot of the lessons learnt from the usage patterns of Portal and Workplace over the years. In the absence of a unified model, there were a number of fragmented models being used to program various aspects, leading to confusion and inefficiency both internally and for customers

Background: Torry Harris is a software services company with a focus on Application Servers and Messaging Middleware. Torry Harris’s business model is to deliver services mainly from its Indian operations with sales and support from its US and European operations. I was associated with Torry Harris during its formative years - I was the first US-based employee.Accomplishments: * Launched an enterprise application development services business from scratch with Fortune 500 clients like JP Morgan, IBM and Bear Stearns. Achieved annual sales of around $5M in the 3rd year of operation. * Built a cross functional team that included several engineers, a project manager, a sales manager and a finance manager.* Defined a strategy that would help the company become a technology based services company from a pure services company. This was to help differentiate the company as well as to increase margins.* Helped identify and build three key J2EE based technology frameworks:** The ASPizer toolkit aimed at Software-as-a-Service applications.** The Web-O-Blocks framework aimed at component based development.** The dotFlow workflow engine aimed at applications requiring a lightweight, integrated workflow engine in the application server.

Background: Transarc was a startup launched by ex-CMU faculty in 1989. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of IBM in 1994. It pioneered several distributed systems technologies include the Andrew File System (AFS), the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) and a DCE-based distributed online transaction processing product suite called Encina. Accomplishments: * Co-technical lead of a team that designed and developed a real-time distributed Publish-Subscribe messaging product. Features of the product include high availability, reliability, security and high performance. The software was based on the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) and was designed for heterogeneous client-server networks. The technology developed by our team was absorbed into IBM’s MQSeries product line.* Worked on building a set of tools to analyze the performance of the Encina Transaction Processing system. Encina is a distributed online transaction processing system based on DCE.
