Hatchery Quality & Research Officer

Hatchery Operator
Marine Operations Manager
I lead and managed on a day to day basis the multiple tasks that the Operations crew executed. Some tasks were very seasonal or sporadic (smolt intake, cage building, net mending) while others are all year round or for an extended period of time (Net cleaning, mort removal, Fish Harvest, Fish grading and transfers). I was in charge of planning and executing on time Fish harvesting, grading and transfers to meet the required deadlines. This meant working in a fast-paced environment oftenly with external last minute changes to our plan. Our crew included around 10 direct reports plus 4 indirect ones on a daily basis. Apart from the above, some other daily specific tasks performed included:• Development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) • Reporting all hazards, near misses and incidents • Risk assessing the tasks and training the crew how to do so• Training the crew on SOPS and VoC for gear use• Constant assistance in the search of efficiency and simplicity in the procedures (daily procedures or new ones)• Record keeping of essential data and forms and reports in time and shape• In charge of Payroll, procurement and invoicing for material needed • Organise rosters, RDO and overtime to achieve tasks and/or avoid bottlenecks• Key part of the crew recruitment process for new team members• Maintaining constant communication with the different crews
Marine Operations Supervisor
I lead and supervised on a day to day basis the multiple tasks that the Operations crew executed. Our crew included around 10 direct reports. The tasks included most of the mentioned above with a heavy focus on the Procedures and less of the reporting/Admin later done as a Manager. A very hands on and demanding position due to the lack of a leading hand for most of it. During this time deep improvements were implemented in Fish Harvesting, fish crowding and smolt intakes. Most of them were related with reducing manual handling/physical work (No boats and cranes on the system farm).
Marine Operations Team Member
Assisted in capturing stock for fish grading and transfers as well as the Harvest process and cage building. This time was very helpful to get my head around the processes and procedures to later on become a Supervisor of the same team.
Production Team Member
Began working on the farm as a feeder the day after presenting my Master's thesis. A great opportunity to understand the everyday tasks involved in keeping Atlantic Salmon alive, healthy and growing. The main tasks performed were assisting in the fish weight checks (handling, scribing, measuring and weighing) as well as hand feeding the new stock (smolts).
Secondary School Teacher
Began this job while finishing my University degree and kept it after graduation. I quite enjoyed learning how to stand in front of a class and guide the students through each lecture and topic, trying to reach every one while and deliver a simple but personalised lecture. I was in charge of designing my own slides, lectures, tests and lab experiments throughout the year.
